I've read a bit about this card, and it gets quite muddled with confusion as to what it is. Some specs say it is a Tahiti but with a 256bit bus and 2GB ram. If this is true why not call it a 7930? And with the dropping $$ of the 7950, is there really room for a stripped down 7900 series unless AMD plans on dropping the 7870/50 down in $$ leaving room at $ 225/40?
Anybody have any insight on this?

It is a cut down Tahiti. The reason for it is the sizable performance gap between the 7870 and the 7950 boost. Too easy for nVidia to fit a card between them. So, AMD plugged the gap with it.

I'm interested to see a review when this hits the streets. It sounds like it could be exactly what I need to ensure quality gaming at 1920x1200 for the next couple of years.

So what are the specs? I've seen both 1280 stream processors and 1536. I think it would make more sense to have 1536, since it's based on Tahiti. I agree with you, OP, in that it should have the 79xx moniker instead of "XT" slapped on the end of 7870. Kind of reminds me of when the OEM-only Radeon X800SE was out. That thing only had EIGHT pixel pipelines, instead of the 12 and 16 pipes of the real X800 series.

According to Sapphire's product page, it will be 1536. I'm not sure where everyone got the 1280 that has been reported in many sites. I'm also liking that it will have 6GHz memory.

Haha - I suppose it would be helpful to check the manufacturer's site huh? They, of all people, would know what their products are. Sweet - I'm definitely liking what I see. Let's see what the price is on this guy.

This smells a lot like a card I have on the test bench right now (same GPU, not same brand). The core is being marketed as a 7870LE with the same clocks and memory. Stay tuned til next week when you find out whether it means "special" edition or "slow" edition? :-D

Sweet! I'll be checking daily...like I don't do that already!

I don't get what your saying here. You say same GPU which means Tahiti, but then you say it is marketed as a 7870LE with same clocks same memory (same clocks and memory as what?) and how could it be LE (we all know what LE means right?)when it uses Tahiti?

Here is the PowerColor at Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131484 ,I hope this is what David_Schroth is reviewing.
Techpowerup review of the Club 3D card is here http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Club_3D/HD_7870_jokerCard_Tahiti_LE/

That is retailing in that 250 area. If it was me and I have that card as an option I would spend the extra money on a 7950. It would run another 50 dollars or so but you get 1GB more etc, which isn't bad deal at all for what you're getting for the money.

The HD 7870 Tahiti LE is a nice card if you wan't to spend close to 250 bucks.

performs well against a GTX 660 Ti. has a 256 bit memory with 32 ROPS and memory at 1.5 Ghz (192 Gb/s). It scales brilliantly with overclocking and performs close to a HD 7970 at 925 Mhz.

here are a few user benchmarks comparing the HD 7870 Tahiti LE and HD 7970 (925 Mhz) and also clock for clock comparisons.

the only drawback is power consumption is high as these are salvage tahitis and come with 1.25v. but the cooler is decent enough to keep temps in the mid - high 70s.

$250 dollars happens to be my sweet spot. I still game on a single screen and only recently moved up to 1920x1200.

This is shaping up to be my perfect card. Of course, we're only months away from seeing what the HD8000 series has to offer.

I'm personally confused by this card. It performs marginally faster then a 7870 but costs a fair bit more and uses a lot more power. It performs about %5 less then a non boost 7950 which can be found for quite a good price these days, and again uses more power with less specs. Irregardless it is the worst product naming or lack of naming I can remember. PowerColor calls it a 7870 Myst. WTF?
I guess with the market drying up for non boost 7950's, this is what AMD needed to fill the gap, but it isn't a very efficient solution at all. It is a power hungry beast, without any of the beast (smaller bus/less ram). When checking out the bench's though it seems that just like Kelper, the Tahiti LE's 256-bit bus and 2 GB RAM isn't holding the card back, even at Eyefinity rez w/4xAA.

According to TechpowerUp's review, it performs a whopping 2% slower then a 7950, is much cheaper, yet overclocks nearly the same...I fail to see how it's not a win win card? A quick Google search shows the PowerColor Myst version @ $235.99 from SuperBiz, and NE @ $259 ($239.99 after MIR) with a free $60 game (FarCry3)..
