just curious.

i dont see many threads at all about the 7870.

i picked one up, because literally, i had no other choice at the 350-400 price range at microcenter when i needed something to build my new ivy bridge machine with.

so far its a decent card.

just curious what you guys think of it.

I was going to get one too, until I thought about how it would space my upgrades out.

In the end, I decided against having just 2gb of vram because I'll be moving to higher resolutions in the near future. Otherwise, 7870 would have been a sick choice especially at the low 300s I was eyeballing them at (less than 6970s at their peak, for equal or better performance), and two together to make a respectable rig until Sandy Bridge became obsolete

Hope you enjoy the card; congratz

I was looking into getting a pair fo 7870's to upgrade from my Pair of 5850's. Then the GTX670 came out, and for $50 more than a single 7870, I can get a single card that outperforms my CFX 5850's. I believe a lot of people went through that in their mind, and probably went with the GTX670 for the minimal cost over the 7870, and considering that the GTX670 can go pretty much punch for punch with the 7970, the 7870 seems overpriced. If you 7870 was priced at $250 (like it really should be priced), I'd be interested again in getting a pair, but right now my interest lies soley with the GTX670....and another one down the road for some SLI fun!

If anyone of intelligence ran AMD the pricing should go like this:

7970 = $380
7950 = $300
7870 = $250
7850 = $200
7830 = $150
7770 = $125

those prices are pretty stupid and don't consider the market value at all. I wish people would stop with the ridiculous
"OMG AMD gpus are so over priced" posts.

7870s overclock like crazy and offer great performance.

im curious now. i havent thought about overclocking.

i wonder how much headroom mine has. i went with the gigabyte 7870 oc @ 1.1 ghz

I definitely think the 670 is an absolute runaway when it comes to price/performance right now, but even assuming that it trades punches with 7970, why would it have to be priced $20 lower? Even if they were both $400, the 7970 would have more ram and compute-- does that count for nothing?

I'm just saying, I don't get the reasoning behind that chart (7950 is 2-4 fps weaker than 670, so price it $100 less?).

Hell, I'd love for prices to be that low, but if you're talking about comparing with nvidia, fair should be fair.

@OP: I know they do overclock; I'm not sure if I'd say they overclock really well. I read that a lot of people hit around 1.2ghz, with scattered reports that they could hit higher. 1175 is no slouch though, considering you could get almost 20% increased performance, according to this, which isn't bad for what you paid for it (I hope)

gtx670 only trades blows with the hd7970 on nvidia optimized games... lol other than that, the hd7950 is its main competitor

Lowest priced 7970 on newegg now is $460. $60 over your price range isn't that much. Just a tank of gas these days. :(

You are a person who has no clue about how to run a company. so please don't comment on AMD's management. :D Companies are businesses with a motive to remain sustainable and profitable. Nobody is going to throw away profits or margins in this cut- throat PC business with slim margins. AMD's current pricing reflects the fact that Nvidia does not have competing products at those price points. Nvidia will fill out their product stack. You could be hearing news at computex next week of GTX 660 priced at USD 300. You can expect HD 7870 to fall below USD 300 if its lesser performing than GTX 660.

Also you seem to have no clue that overclocking performance is considered by many buyers while purchasing.

BF3 2560 X 1600 Ultra 4x msaa
ASUS GTX 680 TOP (1291) - avg 51.3 min 30 fps
Sapphire HD 7970 (1280) - avg 50.7 min 34 fps

Batman AC 2560 X 1600 FXAA High
ASUS GTX 680 TOP (1291) - avg 55.6 min 37 fps
Sapphire HD 7970 (1280) - avg 62.2 min 36 fps

So enough with your GTX 670 is worth USD 400 and Radeon HD 7970 is worth USD 380 argument. :D

HD7870 is over priced. For just a little more money you are better off getting a HD7950.

Look at HD7850 for similar performance to HD7870 for a much better price.

When did you build the PC. if it was anytime after the HD 7900 price cuts (Apr 16) you should have gone for HD 7950 OC. no probs.A HD 7870 oc'd to 1200+ Mhz is quite powerful. you aren't going to have problems maxing out any game at 1080p. :)

My MSI 7850 does 1250MHz/6000MHz with a small voltage boost to 1175mv, and 1150/6000 at stock voltage(1075mv). I certianly wouldn't buy a 7870 when you get nearly the same performance from a 7850 overclocked for $80 less money.

it was before.

and as i said, literally, i bought this because it was the best card microcenter had at the time. paid 350 for it.

The 7850 is probably the better deal because the 7870 is also used for the 7970m part (best binned parts) for laptops, and those are in high demand, might even be backordered.

The demand for Pitcairn parts are probably very high for AMD and therefore keeps the price up.

Thought about getting one but then the 670 came out. I refuse to use blower type coolers, and don't trust most of AMD's AIB partners other than MSI, so I would want a Twin Frozr/HAWK 7870 and those are not cheap. Gigabyte Windforce 670 @ $399 was a no brainer for me versus the cost of a 7870/7950 with a good cooler.

Got a 7850 for a work machine, working great so far. Wish Nvidia would come out with the 660/650 and get AMD to lower prices on these cards.

I'm in no rush to upgrade but the performance on the 7870 is exactly what I'm looking at. I'm just playing the waiting game now.

i think what puzzles me about this card, is im really liking mine. paired up nicely with my 3570k. all the games i play run smooth, i dunno if virtu mvp is making much difference there but ive been running it in all the games i play, which are mostly mmorpg's.

It shouldn't be puzzling the 78xx series are awesome cards. Folks are just "expect more for less" douchebags nowadays.

They want a porche 911 for a toyota corolla price, and feign outrage when they don't get it.

Yeah, if you're enjoying it, damned be anyone to tell you otherwise.

You're always going to be able to second guess your purchase, especially a couple of weeks after the fact when something new and better comes out, and/or the value of your purchase goes down.

I wish I could be someone who buys something and is happy with it. My sig rig has had to have been altered so much in the past few months I'm starting to wonder if I don't have a problem requiring professional help.

Hope you rock that 7870 for all it's worth.
