780i and Vista Install Issues

Not sure what the deal is, but I've been fighting an issue all day with getting vista on my 780i mobo... BSODs everywhere... memory... solid for 4 hrs straight....

No clue why this is acting up... I researched it some and have a patch I can try to install as soon as it comes up, if it comes up.. .I've managed to get to a vista window once in the last 4hrs...

That's a pretty well proven chipset and I really doubt it's Vista.

Virtually any and every time I've had an install BSOD on me it's been RAM (even if it passes memtest) a faulty optical drive and or cable or funky BIOS settings.

One of the best places for info will be the EVGA forums.

Try installing with only 1 GB ram.
Then add the rest of the RAM in.

slipstream sp1? I assume you mean download the DVD or CD of the VISTA SP1 install... how where etc? never attempted that.


I will try to install with one stick of memory today. I was hoping I could get the patch in for the 15 seconds I get before the computer goes nuts...

I have 6 gig of sticks waiting to go into 3 quads so I'll pull a known good stick and try it on 1 gig and then swap after it us up patched and rolling!

This or Vlite seem to be the best options for slipstreaming the install.

First I'm going to try by removing memory and installing 1 known good stick and see if that is the ticket... saves me more time overall. As that is chug'n I'm going to start down the road of creating my own DVD.

Unless you absolutely need SLI I would avoid nvidia chipset based boards. I've had tons of problems with then since the 680i series. Too many stability and compatibility issues for my liking.

When the X58 intel chipset comes out later this year we'll finally be able get SLI on an intel chipset board. Yay!!

yeah thats what i mean, make your own vista cd with SP1 slipstreamed into it, not sure if it will work but it may have some fixes that would solve your problem

i would try the vlite method as nlite is pretty much the standard for windows xp service pack slipstreaming and customization

Just a thought here but all the Vista SP-1 installs are not identical. As a for instance I have a very early copy of ultimate and it was only a few weeks ago that it patched itself. In fact if you check MS Vista site they, at least as the moment, don’t recommend the do it yourself down load and patch.

nForce chipsets can be annoying from time to time but I have yet to have an issue a Google search didn’t provide the answer.

Oh, what patch are you talking about? If it’s the RAM patch about 99% of the systems out there don’t need it and it had no effect on install.

Try the 1 stick of RAM thing, make sure the install DVD is spotless and you might want to make sure you have the latest BIOS. One more thing, and this applies only to nForce boards. To clear the BIOS unplug the machine, jumper the clear pins and strange as it seems pull the battery for about 15 min. Sounds nuts but virtually every chipset since the 680i it’s the only way to get a total and complete clear. If you boot into the BIOS after clearing it and the date isn’t set back, it isn’t cleared. Honest

I'll try that trick if the 1 stick deal doesn't fix it. Its killing me that I'm down over 9k on my farm... ah well not much you can do!

Well 1 stick trick did it... I'm up and running. And in true [H]ard fashion I am making improvements...

I just edited both GTX's to perm boot at 600/1750/1800 this solves the issue of me not being able to get teh 2nd GTX to overclock which should put this computer from 9k to about 13 or 14k!!

I'm also installing the new 6.22 client as why not since this is a clean install worth the try!

Odd thing is I'm running Vista Ultimate 64bit

2xSMP not sure what these are running
2xGPU and teh GTX's are running 2m16s per frame which is pretty damn slow for GTX's... hmmmm

I know vista tends to run faster as it learns your usage... but right now it seems a bit off...

Suggestions?

I was getting the same frame rates with just 1 smp running. I am leaning toward the fact that vista forced an earlier driver to be installed and then when I installed 177.35 it didn't overwrite everything. I'll do the driver cleaner thing tonight and see if that makes it a bit happier!

Right now:

SMPs = 1450 each
GPUs = 3100 each

I know for a fact that the GPUs are capable of 5400 as they are 88GTXs

did the driver cleaning and frames are now 1m16s... SMOKING!!!

GPUs = 5,525 each
SMPs = 1,450 each

Total = 13,950 PPD WOOT!!! Now that is a gaming rig that is maxed for folding!

So did you put your other stick of RAM back in after you got it up and running? Did it start crapping out again after that?

I installed and patched with 1 stick once all patches were applied, drivers, etc I installed the 2nd stick and have been happily on 4Gig of ram ever since!
