7800GTX's span

If you bought a 7800GTX, are you going to upgrade for a new video card in 1, 2, 3, or 5 years later? How long do you think the 7800GTX would last you until you start to feel like you have an 8MB ATi Rage XL PCI? For me, well, I'd say probably at least 2 years until games start requiring more powerful cards for maximum settings.

No doubt. I just got this dam SLI system finished and then they drop a new card. Now I gotta get rid of this stuff so I can build a dual core (AMD64x2) and dual 7800 system. Will we ever get a chance to max out this harware before they introduce some new shit?

Man, I really have no idea, I don't know what NVIDIA is up to. We know what ATI is up to, but it almost seems to me that technology in computers are improving lot faster than previous generations, that's the scary part..

Well you don't HAVE to get rid of it. You can certainly play any game for a long while. I'm still using AGP and socket 754 yet my system is good I think.

i agree. i love computers. but they should give us time to "appreciate" what we already got. only a while ago a 6800 ultra was just released now there's something better? come on. they should release new stuff once a year or longer.

What are you talking about. The industry I feel is going too slow. I remember when every week a new CPU came out and every 6 months a vid card that was twice as fast. I don't think it's going too fast, I think it's going too slow.

all I know is that ATi better start pulling something out of their hats pretty quick. otherwise I just may have to give the 7800 GTX a whirl.

after all, I've had my current X850 XT card for a whopping 5 months or so which is way too long for me.

I would think that the person that spends $600+ on video cards obviously likes to have the best hardware and doesn't really have a problem spending tons of money for it. From there, I'd say that the same person that buys a 7800GTX is going to buy a 8800GTX or whatever next gen, or even a 7800 Ultra or x950XT.

Wow, they've made it so I think that $500 for a video card is an OK price.

6800 ultra was released 14 months ago I believe, therefore it fits your requirement of once a year or longer

I'm still running a 9700... i have to overclock the crap out of those 8 pipes to be able to play CSS with a decent framerate at even 1024x768 .. I wish ati would hurry up and announce their shiz so i can decide if i want to go ati or nvidia for this round...

My guess is one year longer than a 6800GT, and my answer for that is Longhorn - or until Intel releases a decent processor on PCI-E, whichever comes first

CSS? That can't be right. My 9800 Pro isn't much faster than a 9700 and it can run it maxed smoothly with AA and such at 1024x768.

Realistically, we won't be able to answer that until we see how quickly video game engines are developing. It seems like Doom3 is the only current game/engine that can really max out the 6800Ultra, so unless new advances like STALKER, FEAR, and the Unreal3 engine come out anytime soon, there may not even be a reason to pick up a 7800 just yet.

Do you think stalker will really be that demanding? The game is way over due for release and I wouldnt think it would be that much more demanding then the source engine.

What are you talking about lol my FireGL X1 can run CS:S at highest settings at 1600x1200 without AA/AF @ least 60 fps at most situations on a server with few people..
