Hey,

Has anyone tried out the 7800gtx and compared benchies/real world performance as compared to the current crop of pro cards? Now that nvidia's stuff has prices climbing higher and higher, i'd like to know how this stacks up against things like Wildcat Realizm cards, Wildcat VP series cards, even older Wildcat 4 cards, Quadro FX cards, FireGL cards (X1, X2, & X3 cards), etc.

any reports, anyone?

In games? Professional cards are not made for games at all. None of those WIldcat cards can run a game even close to a Geforce 4, let alone a 7800GTX. The Quadro FX cards are now old and cant keep up with even the 6800s, FireGLs are slightly old too now.

Professional cards are made for programs such as CAD, Photoshop and extremely high priced professional software. The main bulk of their price comes from special drivers and not the card themselves.

QFT, atleast now I don't have to look towards a 3400 FX for dual link DVI. :)

ah, sorry, should have specified.

I'm more interested in how the 7800gtx will be in pro graphics enviornments (as opposed to how pro cards are in games).

I play a game here or there, but i also do a lot of 3D, visualization, video/graphics work. Will the 7800 stand up against the (sometimes) older pro offerings?

Well, Nvidia cards professional cards are the same as their mainstream at the chip level....... most of the time.

There are differences, but a lot of the times you can hack the mainstream card to be a professional card and get the advantage of those.

Professional cards often sacrifice speed for accurancy and precession. A missing or misplaced pixel in architecture design can be a HUGE no no, but in a game its meaningless.

Things like this can be done: http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=3&var1=185&var2=0

But they only work on certain cards, and not all of them work, chances can be slime too.

What it comes down to it is.... do you make money from doing this? If so, then I'd suggest looking into professional level card investment, there's other places that are more suited for this and you may even try the forums on this site about stuff like what you do. If you do not make money off of it then I'd just get a mainstream card. If you might make money later then it comes down to how much money you have. Professional level cards can be upwards of $1000 and more.
