7800GTX Problem

Hey all,

I just recently acquired a 7800GTX, only problem is it doesn't seem to work. The card basically shorts out my system. I have a Rosewill 500W PSU with dual 12V rails (15A/16A) Link. Yes I've plugged in the 6pin PCI-E power cable and the computer still just turns on for a split second then off again. Even if I disconnect the 6pin and try starting the PC it still shorts. If I take out the 7800GTX and leave the slot blank or throw in my X700 Pro the PC works fine. Anybody ever experience this before? Is the card bad?

Thanks,
mrw1986

I've never really heard good things about Rosewill when it comes to....well anything but PSU's in particular. That sounds like your problem. It's not powerful enough to run that card.

Eh my friend is powering an 8800GTX off of it...so its more than powerful enough for a 7800GTX...

Its more than likely the psu. If you check any reviews on roswell psu's they are the bottom of the bin.

I checked all the voltages on the rails as well as the amps and everything is where it should be. Christ, the thing is running more stable than my $100 Thermaltake...How is it possible my friend can run his 8800GTX off of my PSU and I can't run a 7800GTX? Please explain...because I'm confused. The power supply I have received excellent reviews everywhere.

Also, this card was bought on ebay and was sold "as-is." The seller stated it was pulled from a non-working system. So I'm almost positive its not my PSU, I'm just curious if anyone has come across a problem of a video card "causing a short," as in system powers on for a split second. I tried the card in low power mode (6pin not plugged in) and high power mode (6pin plugged in).

Ok so, at the intense risk of sounding stupid, it turns out my PSU which powers an 8800GTX WILL NOT power my 7800GTX...I tried the 7800GTX in my buddies computer and it powered on and everything, but there was no video output. Is it a bad card? Also, still doesn't make sense to me how an 8800GTX will work with it, but the 7800GTX will not, possibly because the 7800GTX uses a higher nanometer process?

It might be the GPU....but I would bet my ridiculous government salary that it's your girlyman psu

I've already stated it was my PSU, however I already tried another and the system will power on but no video is displayed in low or high power mode.

only suggestion I could make is to try the 8800 GTX on your system (since you have stated that the card works on your buddies system with the same PSU). If the 8800GTX works on your system then the 7800GTX you bought is a piece of crap.

I tried the 8800GTX in my machine and it worked fine. He has a different PSU than I do, he has a generic Dynex one from Best Buy which has 18A on the PCI-E connector and mine only has 16A so I think that's why. I tried the 7800GTX in his and it worked, but did not output video. So my PSU was causing the problem as far as powering up then down immediately. However, the card does not output video in low power or high power mode through either DVI port.

Turns out its the video card....I bought a 650W BFG PSU with 2x20A 12v rails from Best Buy and plugged in the mobo, cpu, ram, and vid card and the system boots, but no video. I'm returning the PSU to BB tomorrow :) Not sure what I'm gonna do with the card...last time I buy anything thats sold as-is on ebay....

your 7800gtx is at fault and there's nothing you can really do about it right now.
