7800GT - Unlockable pipes!

dose anyone eles wonder why the benchmarks show the 24pipe GT scoreing about the smae as the 20pipe GT, and not like the 24pipe GTX?

I can only assume that the benchmarks were done at stock GT clcoks with unlocked pipes... Maybey it needs the pipes unlocked and the fillrate to get GTX speeds
 
SWEET!, heh sry, thats cool, i was hoping that would be able to happen. Now lots of people are going to have a 7800 GTX :D
 
i dont think it was OC'ed, which would have been needed to perform like the 7800 GTX with the pipes unlocked. nonetheless it does improve performance just unlocking the pipes on it.

well its not entirely the same card, it layout has to be kindof diffrent, since the GT is shorter than a GTX... makes me wonder if "any" unlocked 7800GT will be able to keep up with a 7800GTX overclcoked...

It would've been nice if you said that over here instead of saying that the 7800GT isn't worth it. Makes me wonder if you even purchased the 7800GT...

OMG, I type poorly and spelling...well, yea. Get over it.

When I posted that it was 5:00 am I was not entirely awake :), and it was $449.00, In my eyes, its was only 50 bux less that a GTX? and missing some pipes. Hardly seems worth it untill the price of the GT drops a tad, you know? Once it hits $399-410 it will be a great buy for sure. althought it apears it is allready droping nicely!

We all do things we wish we could take back :p

not at only 50$ less than a GTX, but seeing as how the price is allready droping I will be soon
 
even if it dosnt unlock, its still a hell of a card, and 2 of them will be great!
 
The big question will be what is the success rate. If the success rate is very low it is probably a better choice to dish out the few extra bux for a GTX.

edit: nevermind, just read the guru3D thread, Unwinder the programmer of Rivatuner says the hkpc article is false.

I think I would rather have a 2GB MP3 Player for 40 bucks rather than 45mhz, which is probably pretty easily attainable. :confused:

wow unlocked pipe so meanin that more ppl r willin to buy 7800GT and risk it by flashin GT card with 7800GTX bios lol.

My friend that has a 7800GT tried doing that with Rivatuner, and it well he was able to check the ones from disabled to enabled I'll see if he gets any kind of performance increase.

I think the problem is it dosnt hold when you reboot, and you have to reboot to see a change..

EDIT: and there is a blank spot on the PCB where one MOSFET was left out... doh!
 
I just picked up a 7800 gt for around 350 shipped and taxed from dell. Total after shipping and tax for the BFG and MX518 was 401. I couldnt justify the nearly 200 dollar difference for the BFG GTX. Besdies, look at the benchmarks. I would love to see "hardcore" gamers take the pepsi challenge in real time gaming with these two cards. I am willing to bet you can't tell the difference.

That would explain why the "24" pipe card was scoring closer to the 20 pipes. They didn't get 24 pipes after all. Well, according to what you say. Yeah, there were marginal differences, but that could've just been luck. :p
 
Wait doesnt the GTX still have one more shader unit than the GT? Can that one vertex shader unit be unlocked?

Well it was mentioned a good twenty times in the [H] review that todays games are CPU LIMITED which means both cards have plenty of horsepower for todays games.

Yet there was still a diffrece between the GTX and the GT? so obviously there was some gain to be had form more power on the GPU side. Why was it not gained form the addin the pipes to the GT?
 
According to the review of two different branded 7800 GT's (POV and evga) at guru3d.com, and as mentioned by pduan87 earlier, the 7800 GT card cannot be unlocked at the driver level . This was also confirmed with Alexey (Unwinder), the Rivatuner author. That is why the previously referred benches are almost identical before the pipe unlock and after, since it never actually occured. It is locked at a hardware level, much like the newer NV43 based 6200's.

And, the evga, which comes at 445 OC's the same as the POV which came at 400. In fact, all the cards they had OC'd exactly the same.

But it doesn't really matter anyway (to unlock pipes and such)...the 7800GT is within spitting distance of the 7800GTX's performance...clocking the GPU 460+/1100+ will bridge the gap even more. Overall it's a great video card worthy of carrying the GT suffix. IMHO of course. ;)
 
Yes, for $700 to $800, you will get awesome SLI performance that is still CPU limited. But, for those who demand the most, and have the FX-57 or the like, the GTX is still top dog (for now).
 
I'll definately be picking up one of these. It fits just in my price range, and seems to provide great performance still! Because of the cheaper price, I may be able to afford a second down the line.

How would a 7800GT compare to 2x6600GTs? 2x6800GTs?
What about the 7800GTX?
