OK, I finally broke and took my 7800GT apart. Got this idea from another post here on [H] but BFG’s stock cooling is a little more complicated than just throwing on a fan on their heatsink.

This is the card without it’s infamous logo’d plastic cover followed by a good cleansing of the ram modules and GPU. BFG used Artic silver for the GPU and regular white paste for the ram—lots of it.

Then the AS5 application…

Applied….

bare fan assembly…

fan assembly with antec bracket installed (or hot gun glued lol)

fan installed…

in my machine….

damn cat!!

Now, before, it was pretty difficult for me to reach speed say 473/1080 without artifacting. With this tiny mod, I’m able to go beyond 500/1100 and increase my 3d05 scores 500+. I’m still playing with this so I don’t wan’t to throw out too many numbers but stock cooling doesn’t hold much water compared to this IMO!!! Me thinks 510/1120 or higher may be something to strive for..

Damn man! Thats one mighty impressive mod you've got there. Talk about serouis cooling :p

thanks. I think it's a cheap and effective mod (barely a mod at that) but if I had a window, I wouldn't keep it like this.

let me tell you, that cat is fearless. It attacks that dog, holds on, eat his ears and sometimes wont lets go unless you pull it off. I love that cat. Unfortunaltely, I love the dog too so there's alot of "NO!!!!" and "Leave the dog alone!!!!" but the cats doesn't listen.

Interesting enough, the dog chases the other cat of the house that doesn't fight back. I guess this cat says, not me brother, I got your number!

Might want to switch to something that doesn't go soft when the card warms up.

Word of caution - Arctic Silver 5 on the RAM is a risky proposition. I have seen cards killed this way. If you look closely at the sides of the BGA packages, you can see the bare copper traces. In your case it looks like you put a reasonable amount of material on so it won't likely have much or any spillage, however some people think more is better regardless of the application, and end up shorting the chips out when they flood it with AS5.
To be safe, I always recommend using Arctic Ceramique on the RAM instead. :)

thanks..I didn't know that. I was very careful though putting it on but I wasn't careful because I knew what you just pointed out. Again, thanks.
