7800 water blocks

Anyone know for sure if the GPU/RAM waterblocks designed for the 6800 GT's and Ultra's will fit the 7800? I asked someone in Europe and they say that the 7800 reference design didn't change as far as the waterblock stuff, but I think people will want to know for sure. :)

i cant say FOR SURE, but they SURE as hell look incredibly similar.

I have it on good authority that nvidia moved the top left mounting hole 1mm to the left just so that all aftermarket cooling solutions will no longer work with their new cards. They did this in cahoots with producers of aftermarket cooling solutions in order to better screw over their customers and leech more money out of their pockets. Their philosophy "If they are willing to spend 600 clams on a bunch of silicon why not 35-50 more for a nice big hunk of metal!"

</sarcasm>

It would only make sense for nvidia to keep the same mounting scheme as with the 6800.

They wont. I had to have one modded for my 7800GTX. no blocks out there fit them yet.

haha little did I know my sarcasm was correct!

Architecture got a total workover, why should everything be the same still? I doubt they did it deliberately just to mess with people, that's just fricking paranoid and doesn't make any sense.

If you saw the link to the xtremeresources forums on OCP, it looks like OPPAINTER got his MCW50s to fit his GTXs, but I don't know if he had to do any modding to them or not.

Which cooler didn't fit, what manufacturer's card did you put it on, and what were the differences?

There usually isn't to many problems putting on a square block to a GPU. The fun starts when you put on a combined RAM/GPU cooler.

Yeah, makes me glad I plan on using a Maze4 block. :)

From pictures it looks like the 7800GTX has RAM chips on both side of the card. If this is true, it would render the current crop of GPU/RAM combined coolers obsolete.

That's cool, they were rather annoying anyway.

no it wouldn't, my 9600 pro has ram on both sides of the card  not really anything new about that

From what I am told there is no block out there that will fit without being modded. I chose the ViperFang (best gpu block there is) and having it modded.

So you haven't ever really seen yourself then?

I saw this on The Inquirer:

I don't know if Gainward would sell the blocks on their own, though.

those look good, but only in like 1/4 or 3/8, and performce gain from h2o on the mem was extremely slight.

No, but this is from Viper John...he knows about all that there is to know about what is going on with the new cards. Quite amazing actually..what he tells you blows your mind. He was saying something about how it is layed out or someting that nothing is currently made for that design. It is different then previous layouts.

I'm glad I chose to use AC TwinPlex's to cool my video cards! They can fit anything with just a simple change of mounting screens. :D

That's great dude, but no one is trying to put a 9600 cooler on the 7800. The rumor that is trying to be confirmed/debunked is that the 7800 layout is the same as the 6800 layout. All I'm saying is that the 6800 had all its RAM chips on one side, and the 7800 looks like it has them on both sides. This would make the RAM/GPU combo coolers that are out for the 6800 right now not work on the 7800, as there would be nothing to cool the RAM on the other side of the card and there's no saying that the RAM on the GPU side is even in the same pattern as it was on the 6800.

I just used a lot less words because I thought it was obvious what I was getting at.

Well this also calls into question whether GPU/RAM coolers are even worth the trouble anymore. Basically a throwback to when memory really got hot like in the 9800 class boards. I have thought for a long while now that ramsinks and a GPU cooler will be better in the long run.

Just out of curiousity are you basing your watercooling ideas on cooling 9600 cards and computers that are 3 years old?

The 7800 does have memory on both side of the card, so if you want to cool the ram, you'll need a two sided cooler.

"The rear of the board shows you how the GPU is positioned centrally with its heatsink retained by a fairly sizeable bracket. Another bracket, L-shaped, covers the rear memory modules and double up as a retention mechanism for the rest of the cooler."

Air cooling on emm is usually always all you need. They GPU is what you need to focus on for h20 or whatever.

The man speaks truth. Air cooling is all that is needed for ram.

Gimme one of your 6600 screens and I will test it on my 7800GTX :)

I used the GF4 mounting plates for the Asus 6600GT. If you wait till tomorrow you can have anything Sharka has in stock. And I believe they have all the screens currently made in stock along with the AquagraFX 6800 rev 2 coolers. I wonder if you could put one of those Cuplex Pro's on there?

I know that BladeRunner, a lurker on the procooling forums, designed the first set of waterblocks for gainward...if this is the same design, you know they will work well...
