7800 ultra?

I'm 90% sure NV have a 7800U part waiting in the wings to launch when R520 does. The hopeless optimist in me thinks it'll be a 90nm (TSMC low-k) part with 8 quads (32-pipe) and 10 vertex shaders running at 550MHz+. The pessimist in me says it'll be the same as 7800GTX (110nm 24-pipe etc.) but with a dual-slot cooler and 500/1300 clocks.

I think I'll put my money on the pessimist. :)

I think I will too, since they are going to make a lot of sales thanks to being first to the market
 
Here's hoping that Nvidia can make the 7 series SLI with different 7 series cards...i.e. SLI 7 series GTX with an Ultra.
 
Correct. The card launched now it the top card that NV will put out.

Check the BFG 7800GTX OC. 460/1300 in a psuedo-reference cooler, I don't think pushing for 500 would need that much more metal.

I also wouldn't be surprised at an Ultra launch later on, though I doubt it'll be substantially different. If anything, wait for a RivaTuner patch to see if shipping G70 chips have any hidden quads in place already. Probably not, but I also don't expect a completely new high-end core anytime in the near future. 500/1300 seems plausible, all things considered- nVidia already did that once with NV35/NV38. I just wouldn't expect any miraculous improvements out of it.

Off-topic:
How long do you guys think it'll be before Arctic Cooling releases a new NV Silencer for the 7800? I doubt the NV5 will fit, and the one thing I haven't read in any reviews is the volume- it looks as loud as the previous ones.
