7800 Ultra Cancelled!

This just in from the Inquirer.
"NVIDIA DECIDED to cancel its upcoming G70 Ultra card, a real shocker. We checked this news really well as it sounded crazy to us at first place. However, there is good business sense behind that hard decision.

Nvidia knows that ATI can no ship many R520 XT's running at 600/1400MHz and therefore won't get into relaunching a new faster clocked G70 chip. The G70 Ultra was supposed to be a faster version of G70 card based on existing 110 chip, just clocked faster.

Nvidia G70 ultra would likely be very competitive to R520 XT but it would hurt G70, Geforce 7800 GTX sales and therefore Nvidia won't release it. So all of you who have been waiting for 7800 Ultra you can just forget about it.

Business wise it's better to ship many GTX and GTs and sell them in quantities than to release a limited but faster Ultra. We learned that Nvidia shipped a few tens of thousands of GTX and GTs already and it has been shipping in numbers ever since. Last thing you want is to upset people with releasing Ultra, a card that would be marginally faster than G70 and likely to create more problems than solve them.

In that light a very limited but available R520XT might be a Yule winner and best performer and Geforce 7800 GTX is here to stay. At some point Nvidia has to update it to a 512MB memory version but that’s about it. The key problem for ATI is that it cannot ship a few tens of thousands of those units until December, no chance at all, and Nvidia can reach and beat those volumes with its highly available GTX part.

Nvidia will have some product refresh of its existing architecture but it's just not the right time for it I guess, it will take longer."

Heres the link for those who want to see it here

That sucks since I was waiting for it to come out. Looks like Ill be getting a GTX soon. :(

How can NV cancel a card that was never announced?
Oh thats right this is from the Inquirer.

It makes sense.

In the past, hasn't nVidia always released their fastest cards first, followed by the slower models (Ultra, GT, regular)?

It would make sense that nVidia would release the GTX, GT, and plain jane 7800 wouldn't it?

You seem new to reality, where gravity points towards the ground and the sun raises and sets in 12 hour cycles.

The Inquirer is about as reliable as an antique dealer claiming to have 200 year old cars for sale

Why not? nVidia probably had a pretty good idea that people knew about an ultra card coming out. A reason why they didnt announce it was probably becuase of ATI's delay in the R520. Or another was becuase they werent actually sure that it was going to get anywhere. Knowing now that their GTX line is the best, an Ultra card would just be overkill for what they already have in stores. Since everyone knew, the best thing to do would just make an announcement saying it was cancelled. Would you really announce something if you werent 100% sure about it? They were definitely creating something faster than the 7800 GTX, most likely dubbed an Ultra due to the geForce 6 line. But it looks as if there will not be an Ultra for the 7 series line.

Then how come I always find information on there thats been on other sites like anandtech and tomshardware?

The Inquirer: n00bs will believe anything.
The Inquirer: Where n00bs come for "news."

same way all the nvidia bots here say the R520 missed its launch date....even though it never had one publically.

NV38 (FX5950U) was a faster refresh of NV35 (FX5900/U). I think the Ultra was supposed to be nVidia's mid-cycle refresh. They've done it before, both with the GeForce4's addition of AGP8x (NV25 vs. NV28, and NV17 vs. NV18) and the FX5900 family.

Edit: Add GeForce3->GF3Ti500 to that list.

Thats a bit different, ATI's conference calls talk of a missed deadline.

NV has always said that there was no Ultra, thats a bit different then the r520 isn't it. ;)

actually they never said there would or wouldnt be. It was a word play. Many many people on here for some reason talked as if there was one. References to using eVGA's step up program to the Ultra when its launched galore.

Oh double damn! And here I was thinking they had announced the release of the 7800 Ultra it officially too!

/sarcasm

Here's an idea. There was no 7800 Ultra, nVidia noticed people were hoping for to come out and beat whatever ATi offered (this was with all the R520/580 rumours) and decided to pretend that they had something in the works but actually haven't. Now that the R520 is coming clsoer to release (despite it still not being announced officialy) I think nVidia have felt the need to stop getting peoples hopes up.

Or the idea that it would affect GTX/GT sales isn't a bad excuse either :D

So, interesting. The Inquirer says the G70 Ultra is coming, despite nVidia's claims otherwis, with 32 pipes to fight the upcoming r520. Now, the card nVidia claims never existed, is cancelled because the r520 does not perform well. And, the G70 Ultra was only going to be a higher clocked version of the GTX maintaining the same 24 pipes? Only at the Inquirer.

give me a break certain people on this forum were worse then the inq. They were spinning the 32pipe 90nm garbage even before the inq.

Because the Inquirer has all the legit news as well as the BS news.

Believing the Inquirer is about as dumb as ... well I can't think of anything right now, but the point is that the Inquirer is not at all reliable. The 7800 Ultra was never announced, and therefore was never cancelled.

Here's a better theory:

NVIDIA said there would be no Ultra. But, for some reason a certain online "news" website kept hyping the story that its release was imminent. Having gotten tired of repeatedly being asked when this unplanned card will be released, and fearing that people holding out for a card they never intended to sell might hurt sales of real cards, they finally just said: "It's been cancelled." This, of course, comes as quite a shock to the "news" website that had been hyping the non-existent card all along.

:D

The inquirer steals information?

You mean a site that posts BS every minute of the day ALSO steals information from other sites and reposts it?

NO WAY?!

Duh. The inquirer is just a technical version of the tabloids that everyone makes fun of.

That depends on how you choose to interpret the word 'date'. ATi have publically announced that they originally planned to launch R520 in June of this year. If you want to claim that ATi aren't late with R520 by arguing semantics then you're just trying to mislead people.

Wow, you've sure got a lot of hostility towards the Inquirer! Inq-bashing is certainly the latest vogue around here, it's fun for all the family and you don't need to back-up your accusations with proof of any kind....yay!

So you're saying that the Inquirer posts nothing but bare-faced lies all day long? Their journalists fabricate all their news stories and never communicate with industry reps or go to trade shows? You know all this for fact or are you just basing your opinion on a few dumb-ass stories by Fuad Abazovic? Seems like most hardware news sites don't share your opinion about the Inquirer because you see a lot of links to their stories all over the place.

You're calling this story BS? The only folks who can do that are the ones who work for the green machine - I'm fairly certain you're not one of them. :p

The R520 doesn't exist? There is a big difference between the R520 which is simply delayed - and the fabled G70 Ultra, the existence of which has never been acknowledged by anyone from Nvidia.

Well that's good news for me. I just bought these GTX's and if they were to release a Ultra edition that would've meant that I would have to work a gang of overtime to get the new cards. Hell, I worked my ass off for these GTX's. Just a small price to pay when you want the best. ;)

Dumb move for Nvida. We don't know how the R520 performs let alone any of it's hardware specs. We have had rumors, but nothing more. ATI has not said anything officially. It could just be making things sound bad so Nvida cancels the Ultra. For all we know they may have fixed the production issues by now. It could also have a 512 bit bus and 32 pipes with a 800MHz core. We don't know. ATI has said nothing.

Nvidia doesn't go to the Inquirer for info on competitor's products.

Thats funny I always thought that the GTX was the Ultra because behind that you have the GT.

Newsflash : The G70 Ultra was never cancelled!!!!

In fact it never existed. The Inq made it up in the first place, and instead of getting caught out in their own lie, they decided to add onto the fabrication by falsly claiming it was cancelled. Voila! Problem solved....

Well, too bad its coming from the inquirer, theyre known for delivering bullshit patties. But to be honest, I would love to see them release the Ultra. It would only benefit me as it would cause price drops for the previous cards. I cant afford the best, nor do I need it, but I wouldnt mind paying 400 bucks for a GTX.

Wait a second, you work for the [H] if you get your news from the [H] then where does the news on the [H] come from?

(I know, I know, you are the video card reviewer, and others, mostly Steve, Chuck and Kyle do the news, but circular news was a funny thought)

Have you ever seen one,it's only been talk as of right now. I couldn't agree more the R520 is just as available as the 7800 ultra, as are the spec's.

Then where do you go for news?

Well, besides HardOCP.com I go directly to the source. Sure it's not as timely as the "hype" (a problem in our Big Mac Fast Food mentality, we all want it "now" and it must be totally accurate), but I check the stock news.

For example, the clearest picture of ATI and the R520 status was the reports from the CEO to the shareholders. These pieces of information, although not as frequent (usually quarterly), are by their very nature much more accurate than "a pet bunny of a friend, of a friend that overheard someone on the subway that new a friend of a friend at ATI heard this" that seems to be so prevalent especially at the Inquirer. This is why they have been all over the map, if you look at every single news article, they've got all the bases covered from it sucks to it dominates and every spectrum in between. Yeah, like that's real news worthy or even solid speculation on likely proven facts.

Of course, as someone that purchases and sells shares of stock, I already had this in my mentality. And often times, I make a prediction that often is accurate, even if called BS during the time it was posted.

Ahh well, again we'll just have to see.

As to the original topic of this thread, I don't think "cancelled" is the operative word. I believe that it just won't be released unless absolutely necessary. As other posters pointed out, you only need to surpass the product that customers can actually purchase. ATI having another Phantom Edition won't earn market dominance. However, since a newer core is not required, if the XT edition does become common, the "ultra" can simply be released. All it is, is a G70 overclocked with two socket cooling solution, which will compare favorably to the two slot solution for the ATI XT product. Again, not cancelled, just not released. Cancelling requires that a project be scrapped and as no additional development is required, nothing development wise has been scrapped. Production just hasn't commenced, but still could if necessary

If anything, this rumour, if even true in any aspect may simply confirm the ATI CEO reports to shareholders and that nVIDIA need not go the extra mile for this "time". Both ATI and nVIDIA are working hard and fast for even the next generation, so let's all put on our mystic hats and start spewing more baseless but prophetic statements about those ones. Personally, I think the 64 unified pipline with unified shader model R780 (ATI) card will beat the G90.

HAHA Priceless! Congrats CleanSlate, you have been sigged.

LMAO... You should see this in the INQ soon.

How about this Nvidia saw bench from the R520 and know that the 7800ultra didn't stand a chance and they dump the ultra?

Or the GTX would spank the R520 so they did not need to waste their time.....

This just in the INQ pulls info from their ass, news at 11.

It will be fun to look back on all of these rumor threads in a few months.
