7800 AGP?

Here is my situation...

I can either build a system with AGP, or PCI-E. I have a friend who will sell me his AGP x800 XT PE for 100$. OR, I could buy a PCI-E x800 PRO for about 250$. Doesnt make sense for me to upgrade to PCI-E now, especially since I could have a better card for cheaper, and save the leftover money for later. Keep in mind the AGP card I would have wouldnt be bleeding edge, but it would still last atleast a year.
 
I understand your situation. But I think its futile to put money into a system that is a dead end road. When most people bought AGP stuff, PCIe wasnt thought of, and thats good. But if you buy AGP now, when you see that its replacement is already available, you are throwing money away.

buy the XT PE for a $100 + turn around and sell it for $250=$150 profit.

Actually, that is a tough decision. I would consider buying a eVGA card (unless your dead set on an ATI) for the $200-250 range, then use the step up program within 90 days when you have the extra funds to buy a near top range card (should have the lower end 7800s out by then).
 
I might keep the x800 XT PE for a few months, then sell it when I had $$ to upgrade everything.
 
Announced a few weeks ago, the 7800 GTX was the only declinaison of the 7 serie to support SLI.

That appears logic to me that it is marketed only for PCI-E.
 
Im sure there will be a AGP version (maybe not of this highend card right now), it's just a matter of time. I guessing in a years time from now there will even faster AGP cards. When todays high end becomes mainstream, the market will no doubt in my eyes see AGP cards.
lol, you can still buy a DirectX9 card in PCI format at 128mb. What AGP cards there are now are selling strongly, when that falls off, the companys (whoever that might be) will be looking to cash in where ever there is money to be made.

AGP 8X hasn't even hit the wall in terms of bandwidth and thruput so there's really no sense in just dumping it because the next flavor is here. AGP is still viable and if you look at the performance numbers an AGP card performs as well as a PCI-e card does.

If you want to move to a new system that's all well and good but saying that because some new tech is here we should force everyone to adopt it is kinda crazy, that'd be like saying that since EFI is available in aftermarket let's quit selling carbs and force everyone to adopt EFI...

that will change once engines like the unreal 3 engine comes out and pci-e cards start taking loads off the cpu....

Buy it, use it, sell it for what you paid for it. You're in a good spot to stall upgrading. Just a suggestion.
 
theres only one problem...

there aren't any mATX boards that have AGP (atleast any decent board). I guess i might jump the gun and get a shuttle.
