I'm wondering if I should be feeling some buyer's remorse....

I jumped from a 7950 to a RX580. I mostly play Overwatch, Rocket League, and a slew of other stuff like PUBG and Shadow of War etc.

First off, PUBG is now actually playable, but I blame that on horrendous optimization.

What I was not expecting from buying what is basically the last tier top end card was that everyone is saying it just can't do 4k gaming.

Currently I still game on 1080, but assumed this would be able to still do 4k with medium/high settings.

I grabbed the MSI Gaming X 8gb version.

the RX 580 was never a top end card, it is no more than an optimized (power delivery circuitry fixed) RX 480 which since first moment was aimed at the mid range market.. from the 7950 to RX 580 you should be getting anywhere from 80% to 100%+ performance jump, so I would really think it was a worth investment, it's an adequate 1080P GPU which it's the resolution which it's aimed to play...

About 4K Gaming, not even Vega64 it's an adequate 4K gaming at medium high settings GPU, which it's easily 2x stronger and powerful than the RX 580, so IDK where you got those hopes. you may be able to play few tittles a 4K with a card like that, mostly MOBA style of games but not anything modern AAA games.

So you have "buyer's remorse" because you didn't bother to do basic research before buying?

Sorry. No sympathy from me.

Even the mighty GTX 1080ti can choke at 4K gaming in some titles, but it is the closest thing to 4K capable on the market. Nothing wrong with the RX 580. If you get a 4K TV or monitor, use it in 1440p mode and you will be very happy. If you play an older title then run it in 4K mode.

Enjoy the new video card. ;)

at 4k it'll probably have issues above low settings in most modern games but it does great at 1080p and ok at 1440p. for the price it's not a bad card at all and a damn good upgrade over the 7950. should hold you over just fine til next gen comes out from both brands.

I went from a 7950Top to a Strix 480 and don't regret it one bit. I think it is a great upgrade. I'm only on 1080p 120hz though.

I don't have buyer's remorse currently.

This was more of a hypothetical post to ask if I SHOULD feel buyer's remorse. :)

well this thread is interesting, my rig is starting to show it's age I also have a HD7950 and a a i7-4770K (i have recently overclocked the HD7950 and i7.. 1010/1500 and 4.2Ghz respectively).. for quite awhile no about the only game I play (and maybe 1/2hour a few days a week at this point.) is CS:GO at 1080P.

my somewhat aged 7950 w/ the oc is doing pretty well with CS:GO so hard especially with the current pricing landscape and how little I actually game now a days.. to jump on a new card.. especially a $400~500+ one.. but the $300 and below situation is pretty meh..

my plan for now is to keep on keeping on and wait for new cards or the implosion of mining and pick up teh sweet cheap used cards (that hopefully don't have fried vrm or whatever).

my lack of much gaming make holding steady easier I suppose..

I'm close to the "what the hell call..." but I'm hanging tough for now.. really don't matter in 1080p CS:GO anyways....

That is too much a generalization on 4K. Vega 64 LC: Wolfenstein 4K - max out settings, no motion blur 60 FPS +, Doom (well of course not an issue), playing Dirt 4 currently but have not checked the frame rates - very smooth - maxed out except motion blur off, BF 1, max out and if I remember right 45fps + and smooth with FreeSync. Prey - maxed out no issue. Some of the older, DX 11, less optimized games yes you are correct and would have to reduce some of the settings. Current 4K monitors are virtually all 60 hz hence 60 fps is the best they can show on screen, Freesync is smoothed 40fps and up and still looks good at 35 fps for me. Some of the game settings can really drag performance down with little to no obvious or significant improvement which allows many games to run well without using a setting for epeen feelings.

Now if one wants the most consistent and most able 4K gaming card then a 1080 Ti or Titan Xp is the best choice.

I don't think that is a bad call, Radeons have excellent scaling and you do have an option if the game does not have a scaling option to run it at 1440p and let the driver upscale to 4K. I noticed on Nvidia hardware scaling really blurs while AMD/RTG cards do not. I need to capture this once I get the 1080 Ti rig going again.

Nvidia utilizes an option called DSR smoothness. typically set stock at 33% which certainly I hate I always use at 0% which eliminate completely the shader based AAlike blur effect. however certainly it does help in certain games at odd resolutions factor, anyway I never use it beyond 5% as I dont like shader based AA for the very same blurry reason.

3 or 4 Games are not representative of the game market.. but yes the only truly capable 4K cards actually are 1080ti and titan Xp

That is good info! Maybe that is what I was seeing - thanks for the heads up and would explain the crappy scaling I noticed - except with the 1080 Ti scaling is not needed to begin with ;)

Just tested Dirt 4 on Vega 64 LC, all maxed out, CMAA, including worthless motion blur and at 4K Academy, 72fps minimum and most of the time over 90 fps to over 100 fps. So game wise and what you play also should be considered.

well.... if the only cards that can play 4K are that expensive .. me and my HD7950 are going to keep on keeping on @ 1080P awhile longer..

I mean.. honestly I might (don't say it ..don't say it... ) might switch to console gaming because the PC gaming is too expensive for 4K at least right now.. and this mining nonsense... and memory pricing ...getting a bit irksome...

you can get a mini dp/ HDMI 2.0 from club3D and play games World of Tanks if you have a FX 6300 or better cpu, I been meaning to drop my Sapphire Tri X R9 -280 on my Ryzen 1400 for some fire stirke scores .

I can speak for myself....went from xfx 280x to xfx rx580 (8gb) and have ZERO buyers remorse....I cant tell you how many games use up almost all the 8gb of vram. This dam card can in some situations play vsr to (3200x1800) just fine...Not at 75fps but very playable....This thing runs 1440p like it was built for it with ease! I have a 1080 screen and never run at native res in games....its always 1440p or higher!

I just bought a 2nd xbox one s to use as a 4k player / media center. I was quite surprised how many free games they have in the windows store. Xbox one X is too much for me, considering i require proper inputs to game on (mouse / keyboard) though i am really curious how forza 7 looks on it. With all the talk of cross platform play, maybe we arent to far away from keyboard / mouse support in gaming too.

I have two 4k tv's and i struggle to see much difference between 4k UHD disc and a 1080p blu-ray disc via 55" tv from viewing distance of 8 feet. Though when it comes to VR its a big deal to me.

THe 580 will do well on most games if you downscale to 1800p or so should you be using a 4k tv. The XB1X can do 60 fps on alot games at those resolutions with high quality visuals.
