I just bought some new components for my computer and had a question.

I am getting a C2D E6320 with retail HSF.
I currently have a S478 system using an XP-90 with panaflo 90mm fan on it.

My question is.... are 478 and 775 mounting points the same, and this cooler would work?

Or, would the new retail HSF be as good or equal to the XP90?

Thanks,
-Chris

The mounting system is completely different. I suggest you forget about the XP-90 and just get a newer cooler, since by current standards it's not that great of a heatsink and you can get something like the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro which is fairly cheap and cools quite well.

Don't listen to him. He's being silly.

All a XP120/90 needs to mount up to a LGA775 set is the LGA775 retention module. You can find those fairly easily.

I never said that it isn't possible to attach the XP-90 to an LGA775 board. I merely said that the S478 and LGA775 mounting systems are completely different, and I suggested the OP opt for a new and better cooler than the XP-90 because it isn't particularly great by current standards.

Nah. I just wanted to call somebody silly. I don't have a suit of armour, or a dead chicken though.

And I'm fairly sure the XP90 is at least on par with an Artic Freezer. No proof though, so don't quote me on that. Just faith.

Thanks.

After looking at pictures of the board I ordered, I see the difference.
I found the adapter on newegg, sold out of course.

I will probably just go with something new, Ultra 120 maybe.
Then when I sell my s478 p4 3.0 setup, I will include the XP90 with it.

Thanks,
-Chris
