775 3 pin cpu fan?

i have a 775 board and it has a four pin header for the cpu fan. my hs is 3 pin. is that a problem? i could plug it in, but im not sure if it will work like that. asus p5k deluxe.
 
Yes, it will work just fine that way. The 4th pin is for the speed control, so the fan would just run at full speed if it only has 3 pins.
 
If you want fan control, you can just connect it to one of the casefan headers (that's what I do).
Some boards (my P5B Deluxe doesn't, but my brothers P5WD2 does) have an option for the CPU fan control, you can set it to 3-pin or 4-pin mode basically.
 
I have an abit ip35-e which has a 4pin connector and a cooler master hyper tx which has a 3pin fan and I have speed control through the mobo, maybe the other guys are talking about speed control through the fan but I do have faneq working with my 3pin fan.

Of course maybe it is a motherboard specific thing :eek:

It is motherboard-specific. The stock Intel coolers use 4 pins, with a pulse-width modulation system (PWM) that drives the fanspeed. This is more accurate and more reliable than lowering the voltage or sending short bursts of 12v (the fan will always have the full 12v available, so it won't have trouble spinning up, getting stuck, or rattling).
Some boards allow you to use the 4-pin header as a 3-pin header with voltage control, but officially all socket 775 coolers should use a 4-pin header with the pulse-signal for fan-control. However, most aftermarket cooling solutions have outdated fans which still have a 3-pin header, like on previous Intel platforms and AMD.

As Scali2 has said it is motherboard specific and the abit IP35-E has an option in the BIOS for 3-pin or 4-pin CPU fan.
