Looking to see what would work best for a upgrade that would last with no need to upgrade for 4 or 5 years.. trying to find something 300 or less, kinda tight on funds, my build.. I5 6600k 3.50ghz four core cpu, 16 gigs of ddr4 ram, older radeon r7700 HD video card and a Asus xonar DX audio card, Asus z170 AR series motherboard, corsair h110i gtx liquid cooler and a 600 watt psu

GTX 970 or R9 390 8GB. With a 600w power supply, that can be a bit on the low side for a 390 depending on the brand.

in all honesty....right now is not the best time to purchase a 4 year card. In 12 months time both amd and nvidia will be at full swing on the new manufacturing process (16nm/14nm)...Get a stop gap card to resale in no more than 24 months..or as few as 12 months:) Considering your current cards performance....a XFX Radeon R9 380X under 200 bucks would be a great investment...keep most of your money for when the real next gen cards drop

I'm not really tied to any brand but thanks so far for the input :D

Actually highest-end card from both AMD and Nvidia are struggling with newest game even at 1080P so even buying 650$+ GPU you will be far of receive a future proofing card as even for today gaming you will have to start to drop settings for optimal performance.

Best bet as primetime said will be just buy a mid-range placeholder card and upgrade later to better and stronger cards, also as he said 380X is a good investment.

Planning purchases based on expected future value is a crapshoot. 380X cards may fall to barely $100 when used 970s and 390s drop to under $200 on the Polaris/Pascal launch.

I'll be in the group of people trying to undercut everyone else and sell my GTX970 on the launch of next gen cards :p

What are you playing? A 4 or 5 year card is kind of a pipe dream IMO. For example the 290x was faster than just about anything at the time, is now less than 3 years old, and is becoming irrelevant. It represents a good value today but at that 4 year mark it will be really really dated. Sure as hell wasn't 300 bucks either.

I Honestly never figured these low/mid range AMD cards would do so well....and keep in mind this is all max settings...a few settings tweaks and 60fps is very possible at 1080p

AMD usually sucks with Nvidia sponsored games.....shit im impressed here. Its also kinda cool to see an [H] article showing amd cards to be the better buy.....I guess an 8gb 390 wouldn't be bad under 300....its just that in 12 months there will be a shit pile of 8gb HBM cards to pick from either camps

Its an impressive read for what apears to be one of the best games ever created http://www.hardocp.com/article/2016/02/15/rise_tomb_raider_video_card_performance_review

There are some great deals on GTX 970's here on the forum, has great performance and low power consumption which is perfect for your setup in my opinion, haven't needed more than a 970 since I only run a 60hz monitor.

Theres good deals on the forums? I should check this out lol rather then spending quite abit someplace else.. I don't really aim for maxing out settings, sure it looks nice but as long as the game looks decent and plays decent, I'm happy. I just don't wanna pay a crap ton.. considering my fiancée kept giving me ol evil eyes on my current build lol luckily I tempted her with sims 4 so its all good, lmao

in any 2 week span someone will be selling a 380x for no more than 200ar....but in any case the one you linked to is a fair price. dont rule out xfx in case there card goes on sale

Well, do I really need a 8 gig card? its mostly for gaming so.. while also hoping my current video card can handle the upcoming doom game.. it can handle fallout 4.. thou its also odd, that my current card keeps saying driver failed and had to restart from time to time on games.. not sure what that's about..

8Gb isn't exactly a necessity but if you happen to be one of those guys that only upgrades every 2-5 years or a Mod heavy user then it makes for a very wise purchase moving forward. A lot of AMD cards are showing that kind of behavior. The 7970/280X and the 290/X keep inching forward in the performance category as time moves on and have yet to stall. Really that 7970 longevity is astounding.

I've never been able to stretch my cards to 4-5 years and I always buy at or very near the top end of whatever is currently available.
