I couldn't decide between those two. Which one would you prefer? I use a single 1680x1050 monitor.

That's a really tough choice, honestly.

The 280x starts out cheaper for the Sapphire Dual-x. I snagged one from Newegg with a coupon for $275 and I liked it a lot. Haven't seen a 770 in the wild but it would be slightly faster, in most respects. The software that came with my EVGA card I just got really sealed the deal for me, but it may not be useful to you at that resolution.

Honestly out of all the 280x's I liked the dual-x the best, not too flashy, but a nice bright little LED on the side for the BIOS switch. At first sight the backplate on the Asus model and the Sapphire Vapor-X look nice, but I've begun to shy away from Asus products of late and I find the Vapor-X hideous from the side. If looks don't matter at all, then some of the more expensive models of 280x will have better overclocking capabilities than the dual-x. If saving a little money isn't important at all I'd personally recommend either the EVGA 770 reference style card with the TITAN cooler or the EVGA 770 ACX cooler. I think the Nvidia cards are coming with games right now, not positive.

My supposition is that because the 280x is a 7870Ghz edition, there isn't a ton of overclocking headroom left on the table. But some. And I could be proven wrong.

For that res I'd buy the cheapest card. Either will do well so that's how I would decide.

Try 280x = 7970 ghz edition not 7870.This isnt a tough choice imo the cards are within 5% of eachother depending on the game and the 280x is $50-100 cheaper its an easy decision 280x

Wow good thing you caught that typo. The OP might have gone and bought a 7870.

It's definitely an easier decision if you are concerned about that 50-100 dollars.

I think I'd go with the 280x also but the 770 has a lot more options to choose from--can get it with a TITAN style cooler and design.

a 770 with Titan cooler is almost at AMD 290 prices though which is a rip off. I paid 85 bucks less for the Twin Frozr 770 which does just as good of a job.

but yeah the best value is probably the 7950 unless prices have gone up again.

Yeah. This is a tough one if you're comparing to the 2GB GTX 770. They're basically the same price wise and performance wise. The 4GB 770 is a ripoff, though, as others have mentioned.

the 770 with Titan cooler I was referring to is a super rip off because its 385 bucks and only has 2gb of vram.

Yeah that would be nuts. I got 2 780s each for not much more this past week. I'd rather have a used 780 than a new 770--but now we're probably well off the budget.
