just a weird and almost scary thing.

over the past 12 months i have been tweaking and overclocking and tuning my XFX 7600GT XXX to perform like a beautify, it might idle a bit high but it performs like a dream.

strange thing: i benched a stock 7800GS and won in 3dmark05 but i lost to an 6800 Ultra. how can that be?

If by 7800GS you mean 7600GS like the title, it is normal, the GS i a little under the ultra in performance, but it runs much cooler and more efficiently.

Dunno.

What are your clocks?

I had one up to 666 core, 840 ram.

680 core, 855 mem, that was the max, i could hold the card at that for about 20 mins on air (edit) with a custom heat sink and fan, enough to complete a standard 3dmark bench, it also had some Xtreme G drivers and i had a techy do all the volt modding and other tweaks.
also it wasn't until about a month ago did i add up the total cost for having a heat sink custom made and having the card tweaked and have all these fan and random assortments of cooling devices did i realise i could have just spent the money to get an 8800gts.

what i dont understand is why i was outperformed by an 6800 Ultra.

You may be overclocked to the point where the heat is starting to negatively affect your benches?

I can't imaging spending money on a custom cooler for the 7600GT, I used stock air and an extra casefan.

no, by 7800GS i mean 7800GS and by 7600GT i mean 7600GT

what i dont understand is that my 7600 will outperfrom a stock 7800gs, but not a an 6800Ultra, the 6800 is old..really old

What makes you think it did?

Did you run the same test with the other card or compare it to something on the interweeb?

7600GT is a budget card; 6800 Ultra is by no means a budget card. Shouldn't the 6800 Ultra out-perform the 7600GT? It has nothing to do with the GT being newer. It depends on what games you are running: Shader model 3.0 games or Shader model 2.0 games, etc.

I meant, where did you get the 3Dmark05 for the 6800Ultra? And what was it?

What numbers are we comparing here?

I can't find a 7600GT versus 6800Ultra benchmark, but the 7800GT beats a 6800 Ultra in 05, and a seriously OC'd 7600GT can touch a stock 7800GT.

I did a quick search on futuremark 3dmark06 results...

7600gt ~ 6500
6800ultra ~ 2200
7800GS ~ 4700
7800GT ~ 7800

these were scores I seen on the front page of project search, so these are best card scores..

uh, dude. are you high? First off. 3dmark06 is ridiculously CPU intensive. 3dmark05 is a better comparison. And if we translated that to generally what all cards have been getting for 3dmark05 to 3dmark06, you're telling me that a 7600GT gets 10,000 3dmark05 points, the 6800 Ultra gets around 4500, the 7800GS gets around 7000, and the 7800GT gets around 11,000 right? That makes no sense. that 7600GT score is SLI'd. My 7600GT AND my friends 7600GT both score around 4000 on 3dmark06, and 7000 on 3dmark 05. My 6800GS scores around 6000 on 3dmark05. Fully overclocked, the GS does 6500. I'd expect the 6800 Ultra to get around 6800 3dmarks atleast on 05, and around 4000-5000 on 06.

uhm... I got my card to around 750//900 (1800) with a simple pencil mod + multimeter which cost me about nothing since I had a number 2 pencil and a multimeter lying around, and I spent nothing on the stock eVGA 7600GT KO heatsink... although that's certainly not my 24/7, I did manage to benchmark and all without crashing, lol. 7300 3dmark 05 :( . sort of depressing for that high clock, but the scores start leveling out around those clocks.
