Its pretty cheap upgrade for what seems to be a good card.
Looking to replace my PNY 7600 GS 256 mb with:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130085

I'm already buying one card for my gf's comp ( she does real lite gaming, liek some star wars games) but then got to thinking at this price if i shoudl upgrade my 7600. What yall think?

On a side note, any1 know of a good hs/fan for 8800 gt, i think my heats up a bit sometimes

not that big of an upgrade as it is from 8600GT->9600GT . get a hd 3850 instead . someone is selling for $99 in FS thread .

in some games 8600GT is faster , in some slower.

7600GT vs 8600GT

I'm not looking to spend lots of money :p like i said gf just plays random games that arent too graphically taxing ( star wars, tomb raider)
I would get myself one to play Everquest on my 2nd pc ( 7600 works great atm but either need a new fan or a new card, and at 50 bucks AR thought would be a steal)

dude if your not lookin to spend that much money...you will be outa luck. The 8600GT is a joke, look at the review posted. It loses to 7600GT is some games.

seriously dont throw away 80 bucks.

In newer games the 8600gt is twice as fast as the 7600gt. Those old benchmarks dont mean crap because newer drivers improved the 8600gt significantly in older games too. Im not saying the 8600gt is good but it is a much better card than the 7600gt. That being said I would not buy one now with cards like the 9600gt on the market.

8600 series is utter trash. I'd pick up a second-hand 8800 GTS 320MB or 8800GS for ~$100 instead.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but your 8600gt is not 2x faster than a 7600gt, in any game.

ok a few things people over looked

First he has a 7600 gs not a gt not much difference but still a difference.

A 8600gt will be better than a 7600GS. You can probably buy the 8600gt for 50 bucks and sell the 7600gs for pretty close to the same and come close to getting a free upgrade. This will probably be the cheapest upgrade you can get and it seems like that is what you are looking for.

^this. 8600GT was a POS. On newer games it will beat out the 7600GT by maybe 25%. On other games, it even gets beat by a notch. The tech improvement from 8600 over 7600 was pathetic. Now 9600 over 8600 is a completely different story. You'll pay twice as much for a 9600GT as a 8600GT, but you'll get more than twice the performance.

I agree with everyone else, dont get a 8600gt my brother has a 8600gts and it really doesn't play games well.

go for the 8800gts 320 $115 at the egg i believe)
or a 3850. spend a little more than $50 and get something that will actually play games and make you happy

I have the 320mb and it has served me well, but I would trade it for a 9600GT if I could because I've recently upgraded to a 24" monitor. It sucks not being able to play with AA anymore.

the same results hold true for STALKER, Oblivian and other modern games.

its 100% more worth it to go with a low end 8800 series card. they have over double the setm processors and you get much bore performance/price. the prices are at a all time low rite now too.

I agree. For gaming in DX9, the 8600GT's are decent, but for the prices of todays 8800GT's and 9600GT's, it would be better to go with one of those. As for DX10 games, don't even try. The 8600GT buckles under resolutions at 1280x1024 (depending on settings).

Honestly, get a 9600GT or HD3850, both are great cards and have waaay more performance than the 8600GT.

The 8600GT isn't a bad card, but it is only good for moderate gaming.

EDIT: The 8600GT does beat the hell out of a 7600GT in modern games.

8600GT > 7600GT > 7800GS > 6800Ultra > 7600GS

"The 8600 GT is a joke in my opinion and does not deserve to be part of the x600 GT series. If anything, what we have see here today should have been performance delivered by the 8500 GT, not the 8600 GT. The results really spoke for themselves, as the GeForce 8600 GT was 12% slower in Far Cry, 17% slower in F.E.A.R, 7% slower in X3: Reunion and 19.5% slower in Company of Heroes. The only two games that the 8600 GT came out on top in was Prey (15.5%) and Supreme Commander (27.5%), making a two out of six effort very poor indeed."

You can find many reviews out there that have the same conclusions about the 8600GT. Just don't use Gamespot as proof as that aren't meant to be a site that reviews hardware. Though I don't claim to know it all, I do know that the 8600GT is a POS for its generation.

I however, don't use mine for gaming, but for video editing with After Effects CS3!

Oh, and the 8600GT beats the 7600GT in video editing performance as well. The 7 series in general wasn't that good for it (probably due to drivers).

Thanks everyone, think I have it all figured out. Just got to find myself a power source :p

Id say get a 8800GTS there better than the 8800GS and its about 100-120 also=/ well the 320mb one=).

Really the 7600gt was a BEAST for its time. Hell, its still a great graphics card and can run anything out there (some games on low). Right now, the "beast" that took its place is the 8800 series. Get a GS or 320mb gts and you will be set. I run a 320mb on my 19" and I couldn't be happier. Upgrading from it hasn't even crossed my mind.

Uh, not really. The 8800GS is also under $100 (well, $99.99 after MIRs ATM :D ) and will run circles around that 8600GTS. The 8600GTS is pretty much a waste.

Well it depends on how valuable money is to them. If you don't game and don't have money they 8600gts or gt will slaughter any 88 in a price war. When I was 17 saving 25 bucks was like saving 250 now.

You want to disregard my Gamespot link yet you are trying to use a year old benchmark? Like I already said the 8600gt improved its drivers BIG TIME from its original release and thats a fact. STALKER, CSS, FEAR and Prey just to name a few were all greatly improved and some games almost doubled the fps with newer drivers.

I dont recommend the 8600gt by any means but if you pull your head out of your butt and listen to me you would realize that it is a much better card than the 7600gt. I owned both cards and I know what it can and cant do. The 8600gt did suck when it was first released compared to the 7600gt but that all changed with improved drivers and in newer games the 8600gt beats the crap out of the 7600gt.

If you don't game it is a completely different story (in which case I would recommend buying some old used 7xxx or 6xxx series card ;) ), but $25 for twice the performance (or more) is pretty much always worth it even if you only game every so often. And if you don't game you shouldn't be looking at an 8600GT or GTS anyway, as there are cheaper cards that will run Aero just as well ;)

True, in the case of the gts but the gt is only 50 bucks so it is significantly less and at a very good price point for the performance......but nothing beats the 9600gt in bang for your buck assuming you have the extra buck.

I went from 7600gt to 9600gt and 3d mark went from 4000 to 11000 so yeah as for bang for your buck I don't think the 9600gt can be beat (aside from super deals on 8800gts)

Oh yeah! I remember when the drivers were complete crap! STALKER ran like sh!t. After a few new driver updates, it was like a new card all over again.

The 7600GT was good for its time, but is now sorely outdated. To say it is still a good card is utter bullshit. It's three generations old and can't even do 128-bit HDR (HDR w/ AA enabled). Lame, even the ATI X1000 series could do that (at the same time period as the 7 series). The Series 8 was a big improvement. Now with the Series 9, there is no contest.

7600gt still rocks games like HL2 and BF2 I have 2 computers using them. Hell most the games I find myself playing are 3 gens old.

FEAR, HL2, Doom 3, Quake 4: ftw

Yeah, I like these too, but they also don't really have/use HDR (except for HL2: Ep 1-2).

Well at least we can agree on one thing.
lol I guess so. You just need to realize that 8600gt is not as shitty compared to the 7600gt as when it was released. If I didnt own one or look at newer game benchmarks then I would think the same thing you and a lot of others do. Red Falcon and I own the cards and can tell you how newer drivers have improved things. Also again its not even close in newer games as the 8600gt is on average about twice as fast as the 7600gt. ;)
