Okay. Here it goes. I found a Packard Bell Legend. This PC is state of the art and will smoke any P4 or A64 :p .It's got a Pentium R 75mhz  cpu and a whopping 8mb of ram and it actually turns on and runs Windows95. I am in awe. I should be getting a call from the Smithsonian any moment!

So heres my question.Could this thing possibly fold?

I figure it has to be good for something.

I've been wanting to say this for awhile....

Kill it with fire!

It's good for sledgehammer practice and idiots on eBay.

Probably a little too slow to fold realistically. Now if it had a turbo button...

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the blessed turbo button. To infinity and beyond!!!!!

You will need at least 98 on it to run f@h :p

I have an ole 3 gig with win98. Maybe I should try it out.

Heres a funny question. What will happen If I put in a video card with a 350mhz gpu when the main cpu is only 75mhz. Now that would be funny

you know, if UD supported *nix..i would say UD it...but of course, UD doesn't

the reason being, UD WUs are smaller than FAH WUs, they finish faster.

at any rate, try getting a picoBSD *nix to work on there... luck w/ that :p

I booted up a 133 awhile ago. Tried to install all the win 98 patches it needed--- about 2 hours later I unplugged it and gave up.

They make a good boat anchor………..if the boat isn’t too big  ;)

Well, I upgraded the video card from a 1mb to a 4mb and I added a nic card. I went to install win98 and it said. Error! You need at least 16mb of ram to install Windows 98.
Oh well. I'm looking for a linux distro now. I know they have some that run on 486's. They should run like a champ on a Pentium R. 75mhz :p

See, you should send that to me for a birthday present. It will make a very nice anchor for a 1KG block of sodium I plan on sinking into the sea off the shores of California. =]

Hmm, I have a 12mhz 286 sitting in my basement, complete with 40 megabyte hard drive and 1 meg of ram. Now THAT'S a folding beast. FLECOM and Logikality look out! :D
And yes it does have a turbo button! I can feel the p0\/\/3r!
It was my first box and I just can't bring myself to throw it out, so now it just sits there gathering dust.

Aratech, be sure to let us know if you get it up and running. I'm curious to see how it does. If not, hey sledgehammer practice is always fun. :)

Ya know... you guys oughta polish them up real nice and pay a visit to the antique roadshow. You guys have pieces of history there... might be worth something.

Aww Damn, mine is only 8mhz with 25mb HD :(. But seriously you could try running fold server, And let the 75mhz be a client. Just my 2c.

Tell me more about this fold server......

OC IT! you should be able to push 80mhz with watercooling... :p

:p What would i have to do?....put it in the freezer? :p

You know what's funny though...
It runs pretty darn fast with windows 95 on it.

I guess thats proof that microsoft can write an os that isnt a memory or resource hog.

Couldnt they apply this principle to XP ect????

Well there's always liquid nitrogen.... :p

And for fold-server, you can do a search on the forum, there are a ton of threads about it out there, and its administered by our very own unhappy_mage.

edit: This post has links at the bottom with details.

I can see it now.

I just started using it, You have to have another comp, with a lil more Horsepower. Which is the server, then all your other comps boot from that copmuter over the LAN, and they all fold. Uhnappy_mage is the guy to talk to. He helped me get it up, (Which it still is having a prob, Mage) It is a bitch to get up, but is nice to have.

2010? :p

Hey, your sig says you have too many PC's to list. Is there a thread somewhere with all your hardware listed?

So they arent sharing processing power then. Whats the benefit?

the f@h project does not allow shared cpu power sadly...

it makes it easier b/c you dont have to have a HDD / OS for every single box you are running

Oh I see. I guess Stanford doesnt use clusters if the program doesnt support shared cpu power.

Wow a reverse e-penis bragging party...what have I missed!

Have that still boot and run IBM XT 4.77mhz 8088, 10mb HDD, 640k RAM, dual 5 1/4's, and MS-DOS v2.1.

And a IBM XT Turbo 8mhz 8088, 20 mb HDD, 640k RAM, 5 1/4, upgraded to a 3 1/2, and MS-DOS v2.1.

Then there are the Tandy's.....I have a veritable collection of TRS-80 models in storage.

Folding goodness here I come!

I had forgotten all about the Tandy!!! I used to work at radioshack a few years back. We had people coming in all the time trying to order parts for those. :p

Unfortunely you would need at least a 386 to have 32bit capabilities though.

Anyone have a 386 SX 12? That would be the slowest machine that could possibly fold(if the binary supports 386 instructions.) The SX 386 model is a 32 bit chip that will run on 16 bit bus 286 boards.

I will sell you an old HP Pavilion PC already overclocked from 75Mhz to 90Mhz if you are interested. ;)

P-75 running *nix might be good for a router. I've got a P-120 tablet that I've thought about running FAH on, but the heat/performance ratio is poor. It does run surprisingly quick with 98Lite installed (Win98 with web integration stripped out), and works great for portable web surfing. Hmm...I have an i-Opener that's sitting around and runs XP (for small values of the word runs), is 200 more MHz worth it?

I have a garage full of old pcs 75mhz boxen to 150mhz a bunch of 150s and 133 pentiums that I'm sure will be the best for this s illy old school pc project

so anyway they moslty have 16 megs of ram and I could add more from some of them to make them have 32 or so...

and Ive been messing with getting linux to run on these... seams I will have to install linux on the hardrives because of the lack of RAM the live CDS won't boot for me..

I'm trying DSL right now and downloaded a few others to try

any suggestions would be great

note: I plan on first having about 8 of these machines running F@H cause I have a spare 8 port hub I can use for them..... just gonna stack them up in the basementif I can get this linux working...

Lol, yea I remember the seti days...

I had 2 P i200's searching away, had to explain to everybody who walked in tho...

Think they'll ever find anything?

Maybe we should start a DC project to find Osama. I guess the NSA is already keeping tabs on their electronic communications though.

What the hell are you guys talking about, my main box is a 75 MHz. Took me three minutes to type this. :p
