I will be doing my very first computer build and want this computer to be mid-high end for gaming. It seems this Silverstone powersupply is good? I'm wondering if 750W would be overkill? I don't mind spending the money but want some opinions. Also does having a high voltage PSU in my computer draw lots of electricity even when idleing since I leave my computer on all the time. Would the electricity bill go up alot? This is probably a stupid question but I'm curious.

This is my planned build:
Lian Li PC-G70 Full Tower Case
4 120mm fans (intake, exhaust, side, blowhole)

Intel E6600 Processor
Motherboard (Not sure, want something that will last 3 or so years if possible)
2 Sata Drives at the most. Probably one of the 320gig Seagate Baraccudas to start with.
2x1GB Corsair Ram...possibly 4GB years from now if that is the norm.
eVGA 7950GX2.....Later on I would like to stick with single card high end DX10 card. Not sure how much power these will consume but this is the reason I want a high voltage PSU, for upgradeability without having to replace the PSU. This make sense? I might eventually make the switch to SLI but want to see what happens with the DX10 cards. I'd just wait for them, but I have had the same computer for 5 years and I haven't been able to play anything for years and can't wait much longer.
There's not an aftermarket VGA cooler for the 7950GX2s right? If I go single card in the future though I would want one of these.
20.1" Widescreen
X-Fi Extreme Music
DT770/80
Probably one DVD-Rom Drive
Floppy Disk Drive
G15
MX518
I think that's it.

Basically I want a great quality PSU that I will be able to use for 5+ years and be able to handle future components. Overkill? And if so, what should I am for? Also, I'm really not in a hurry to build this rig anytime soon. I could wait for acouple more months if Silverstone or some other company is planning to release a new line of PSUs?

Any help,advice, opinions are appreciated.

Well, none of us know how much power a potential SLi setup with DX10 GPUs will use, but it is safe to say that a good 700W PSU should handle just about any video card setup for a long time. Now, Silverstone PSUs are really good, but they also cost a lot, you can get a much cheaper PSU (in price) that will handle the same loads. Try something like this:

Sound doesn't really matter. I don't want something really loud but I will have closed headphones on during gaming. I sleep about 5 feet away from my comp though so this might be a problem lol. I have read some reviews on new egg saying this Silverstone is loud. I'm guessing this is due to the 80mm fan. Other's say it isn't too bad.

I guess I should also add that I don't know anything about overclocking. It seems like the E6600 will overclock well though, so I might learn pretty soon. Still, I wouldn't do any major overclocking. Medium at best.

Also, this PSU is listed at 209 at Newegg and 179 at Performance PCs.

I was going to get the headphones first and see how it works. I've never had high-end headphones before so I don't know what to expect. If I need an amp later on I'll see whats out there. :(

I've got the Silverstone 750w PSU in my system, and my 7900gt fans are louder than it. I sleep in the same room as my computer, and it doesn't keep me awake. It's actually alot quieter than the reviews make you think.

7800/7900 fans are louder than anything in a computer PERIOD.

I had two 7800GTX cards. I took one of the cards OUT so I could hear over the PC. :( Screw FPS. Mass quantities of Goody's headache powder was breaking the bank.

Maybe not my computer, Delta's. Keeps everything nice and cool.

That, and when i had super silent stuff in my pc, even the 6600gt stock fan sucked. 5000 rpm, 5 cfm, 40 db of squeeling fun.

See, I'm really sensitive because I went from a pair of the Gigabyte/Zalman 6800GT's to a pair of eVGA 7800GTX's. So I went from no fans to fans.

When I have time/money, I'll put the second card back in.... after I install water blocks!!!!

I would say it's overkill for the specs of that system...but if you can afford it then why not? It's better to get too much of a good thing than not enough. I don't have personal experience but Silverstone appears to make quality stuff and a 750w rated psu should give you plenty of headroom to get decadent and ridiculous pimping out your rig in the future.

dont fall into the "save some money and go for a cheap psu. Get the Silver Stone and rest assured your investment is protected and stable do to your choice.

I have a Silverstone 750W PSU and I totally agree with these guys. My rails are rock stable even at overclocked speeds and the fan sound is negligible. I've used many types of PSU's and I would rate Silverstone 2nd only to PCP&C.

I have two of the Silverstone 750Ws here too. they are good units. One thing I did notice in the last few weeks when I had a 1KW PCP&C set up next to one was that the PCP&C got very hot just running minimal 3D apps, where the Silverstone was cool to the touch...and quiet.

I happen to be doing some CrossFire stability testing now on both PSUs as the same time, and the units are pulling 400 watts at the wall and the PSU is a mere 100F.
