Been using headphones for my entire computer career but iv moved and im ready to blast some speakers! been looking at the SWAN M10 but just wanted to see if anything else was out there.

The Swan M10 is popular, and people seem to like it for the price. I have never heard it in person, however, so I can not do comparisons.

The M-Audio AV40s are in that range, and, after hearing them, I like them a lot for their price.

I am a fan of the Audioengine A2s, too, but they may require a sub down the line depending on your intended uses and room size. They are also a bit more expensive at ~$150 on sale.

Some go for the klipsch ProMedia 2.1. I had this set in college and found it to be good for what it was. I would imagine that the M10s, AV40s, and A2s would be better for music, however.

thanks tesla, gonna check out those AV40's im mainly looking for something with a good amount of bass and those look good :).

If you want good bass, you need a sub.

AV40s are good - but as they only have 4" mids, you won't get much bass. Same for any set of speakers without a sub. I bought a Polk PSW10 sub to go with them, and the setup is I'd say good for the price. The sub is surprisingly tight given how cheap it is - a lot less boomy than my old roommate's Logitech 5.1 setup that he paid way too much money for. It won't be as good as a higher end sub though.

edit: Swan M10 will probably have better bass than AV40s, but at 5" probably not too much more. ProMedia 2.1 will be better with the dedicated 6.5" sub. But AV40s + any 8"/10" sub is IMO still the way to go though it's more expensive.

Yeah thinking about buying the AV40's now and a sub next paycheck....any idea on the AV40 mkII? pretty much the same as the normal av 40?

The Mk2 has no 120v/220v switch, no bass boost (which you should leave off anyway if using a sub), and no removable cord.

They're also rated at 15w/channel, but I'm not sure how meaningful this is - the weight is listed as the same as the original AV40s so I'd guess they just rated them more conservatively for some reason rather than scaling the amp back.

So I'd guess pretty much the same. :)

See, I disagree with the bass comment on the AV40's.

I thought the bass on them was fantastic as is and didn't really require a subwoofer unless you are listening to pipe organ music or watch movies at loud levels with tons of infrasonic bass material in them.

Either way, they are really fantastic speakers with a really full sound to them. I sadly sold mine awhile back but I plan to buy another pair once the funds allow for it.

Agree with Mathemabeat... It depends on what you're listening to. I'm a fan of bands like the eagles, bruce springsteen and james taylor.. (call it soft rock, old skool rock, whatever...) And i don't miss the bass at all, but when listening to dance/techno you will miss it a bit. The bass is pretty good, and packs quite bit of punch..

Agreed - you probably won't care for those kinds of music, but you'll miss it if you're like me and listen to rap or dubstep.

So I guess it depends on your music. Give the AV40s a try, and if there's not enough bass for your taste, get a sub.

First post but been a lurker for awhile. Musician's Friend has the Mackie MR5 monitor on sale for $99.99/speaker. Never heard them but they get some good reviews.

Speak for yourself on that one...my Energy RC-10s push out tons of bass with for only a 5" driver with my HK receiver capable of 120 wpc. If I wasn't a huge bass fan that loves really really deep bass I would be more than happy without a sub.
