Sorry...this may have been covered a lot by now...I just wish I could use the search button:(

I'm just considering getting the 74GB Raptor because you can get it today for 175 at buy.com, which is a pretty decent deal. But as I've been thinking about it...that is still A LOT of money for a hard drive when I can get a "normal" maxtor 160 or something for like 50-60 bucks on a good deal...

Anyways...I'm just curious about the performance gain over 7200 drive. For instance, right now I'm using a maxtor 120 GB with 8MB cache. Will the performance be barely noticable, moderately noticable, or quite a big difference? If there is quite a big difference that you can actually "feel" in the real world...I'd probably be willing to shell out the money.

Oh and I heard this are quieter than the 36 GB versions. Some people say you can get them near silent if you suspend them...so that is good for me cuz I have a fairly quiet computer.

I would go for the raptor... heh suprised you're worried about price.
considering you ahve two gigantic LCDs
.

Look at this article for scores of the raptor 74 gb compared to other SCSI drives:

And then go here to see the raptor 36 gb compared to 7200RPM IDE ATA drives. Since the tests are the same, just look at the numbers for the 74GB raptor on all the tests and compare them to the numbers on this second article to see where it lies in comparison.

Hope this helps. Also, I just checked buy.com and it says the raptor 74GB is for $199 AFTER Rebate. Where did you see it for the $175? Thanks.

Well...you can use a 10% off coupon bring it to 215 and then -40 dollar rebate brings it to 175...:)

rebate part sucks...but after it comes in...its a sweet deal...

I think i'm gonna get one. If it is too loud or doesn't feel fast enough to merit the 175 bucks...it looks like buy.com has a great return policy (no restocking fee, just pay for return shipping)...
