I have a 2010 15in MacBook Pro. I've gotten into high def video finally. Last night I was watching Saw VII in HD (and other 720p/1080p movies lately) and I noticed it started to lag. I looked and I had like 27mb of ram left. I was about an hour into the movie. So, I restarted my PC thinking it was just glitchy.

It booted up, closed everything other than VLC and I had 3.02gb of ram free.

I finished the movie (only 30 minutes left) and I only had 1.64gb of ram free.

VLC was the only program open.

What is causing this? Is it a VLC issue or what?

It would definitely appear to be a memory leak in VLC.

Try MPlayer OSX Extended. VLC on OS X isn’t very good.

Give Perian a try and play stuff through Quicktime. Can't handle every codec even after Perian's installed, but it can do a lot more, often more smoothly than VLC.

Weird. I've never had a problem like this. I use VLC and I am also an HD snob.
