Whats the difference? im looking at building a new system.. ive found 7200.10 which ive read is perpendicular recording and its a good thing (ive heard the drives are pretty quick) but now im seeing 7200.9 what are those?

7200.9 is using the old parallel recording method.
7200.10 is using the new perpendicular recording method.

Other than that, no real difference. Both have right at the same seek times, cache, etc.

ahh ok :) thanks

I've seen rumors and lots of posts on the 7200.9 having a high number of failures, then again there lots of posts on that for every other brand, but might be worth looking into.

Some swear the .10 is faster, but in reality its just the difference between the way it puts the data on the disk and both have the same specs.

Seagate makes the best drives IMO and so any of their models should be very solid. My 7200.7 is still running flawlessly after all these years and it has watched 4 WD hard drives fail in the same case next to it :p

Seagate has it so 7200 is the RPM and the .xx is the revision.

Get a 7200.10 over a .9 for sure. My .9 is the second loudest drive I have, only my .8 surpasses it. My .10s and .7s are completely silent.
