710T vs MultiSync 1765

I am currently looking to buy a good 17" LCD for gaming. I pretty much narrowed my choice to the Samsung 710T because of its 12ms response time and the 24-bit color (unlike the 172X, which only has a 6-bit panel, so it can't truly reproduce 24-bit color).

Having more or less decided on the monitor to buy, I decided to go to Bestbuy and check out the monitor in action. I was mainly looking to see for myself whether there is any ghosting with fast moving images (since a lot of people seem to be divided on this issue). Well, they didn't have the 710T on display there, but they did have the 710MP, which has also a 12ms response time, but the color panel is 6-bit (same as the 172X).

Anyways, what happened is that when I walked into the monitor isle, I looked at all the monitors on display and one monitor totaly blew me away. That was the NEC MultiSync 1765. The picture quality of that monitor as compared to all other monitors in the entire isle was unbelievable. All the monitors were playing the same video sequences, so I could compare them all side by side, and the NEC 1765 was leading the pack (by quite a margin) in terms of image sharpness, color quality (sooooo much better) and most importantly it had no ghosting (as in a shadow of the previous frame) or blurring whatsoever. The quality on that monitor was simply amazing!
At first I was suspecious that perhaps all the other monitors were not calibrated properly, so later on I droped by Futureshop, and indeed the same thing happened -- namely the NEC 1765 was by far the best monitor in the entire isle (excluding the NEC 1565, which is the 15inch version of same monitor).

Now, I would have bought the NEC 1765, but three things stopped me:
1. The NEC 1765 has NO DVI CONNECTION! Only analog. That was the major show stopper for me.
2. The NEC 1765 has a glass protector on the screen, which causes tons of glare. But this point is not that big of a deal, since it can be minimized by changing the light positions around the desk.
3. I still haven't seen the 710T (neither store had it on display).

Now, I read all the reviews saying that the DVI connection is a lot more superior in terms of quality, and I don't know what kind of connection they were using in the stores, but I would assume they were all running on analog. Could this be the cause as to why the NEC 1765 seemed so much more superior? Do you think that if all these monitors were running on the DVI connection they would ALL improve SO much? Does the DVI connection make a TON of difference? Anybody know?

BTW NEC 1765 has a 16ms response time, and either the 12ms on Samsungs is overated or the NEC is underated, but the 16ms on the NEC was much better than the 12ms on the 710MP.

Edit: I am also interested to know if anyone has compared the 710T to 710MP to NEC 1765.

dvi MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE... especially in color reproduction if thats wut u care about (u cared about the 6-bit panel) and lack of dvi is painful... mi cheep lcd don have dvi, and once u see dvi, u won wanna go back... and most of those in the store are probably analog, cauz the analog is cheap (video card and cables). But the 172x an't that bad, but rite now i got mi eye on the dell 2001FP (20.1 in monitor 16ms response time $700-$1000)

Vinny doesn't quite understand that some people really do need the space saving form factor of LCDs. Not to mention LCDs produce a far superior picture (yes, moving can cause ghosting, but any slow-moving or still picture is going to look better on an LCD). CRTs are big and bulky and only beat LCDs in one category - fast-moving pictures. I think you will not be disappointed with a 710t. Vinny must also note that he may have sensitive eyes, as I do not notice much ghosting at all and neither do most other owners.

i originally bought a pair of 710Ts for myself. they turned out to be so good that I bought 2 more for my girlfriend. I think they are well worth it. I play lots of quake 2 and the gameplay on it is exactly like it was on my high end iiyama crt.

I do have sensitive eyes and they are bluea nd when its sunny out they automatically close

Well, I have pretty much decided on an LCD rather than the CRT. The question though is which? 'Cause that NEC 1765 looked amazing in terms of quality, but again, all the monitors where probably on the analog connection, so the DVI might close the gap.

To the people who got the 710T, did you guys look at NEC 1765 before buying? If so, why did you choose the 710T?

No I did not look at it. I wanted DVI, and well, knew the 710T was one of the better LCDs out, so I got it. Oh...and maybe I wrong..but did you not think that the glass over the screen actually made the colors appear more vibrant and the such? Ive seen glass over monitors before (LCDs) and it always makes them look better.

Yeah, it's possible, but the more I think about it, the more I am inclined to believe that the difference was due to lack of DVI connection for the other monitors. I am also leaning more towards the 710T.

DVI > Analog 15-pin. Plain and Simple. Lack of DVI would not have helped the LCD with color reproduction (DVI gives true 1-1 coloring, while analog is more of an approximation). The nec may have looked better to you in store due to calibration issues. It's specs are very low as far as a gaming LCD's specs go; 400:1 contrast ratio, 225 nits of brightness, but the response time and viewing angle are respectable at 16 ms and 160, respectively. The lower brightness and contrast would generally lead me to qualify this LCD as having a much lower picture quality, while the 16 ms rating is subjective (and beaten by the subjective 12 ms of the 710t). The fact is that the 710t produces the best picture of any LCD I've seen. I used to work at fry's and I recall not thinking too much of the NEC LCDs, so it very well could have been a connection or calibration issue on the other monitors.

Gonna drop by monitor depot on tuesday and get me a nice new 710T :) Too bad these things don't come in silver, I don't have anything black except the mouse, lol
