700m or Macbook?

I am trying to decide between the Dell 700m, or the Apple Macbook 15". I want a light and very portable notebook, this will be my first notebook also, and I've never had an apple. The dell would be about $1000 cheaper, so I'm leaning towards the 700m. Also, is there a local store (Bestbuy, officemax, officedepot) that sell the 700m?

The 700m is not sold in stores. As far as a "very portable" the 700m is going to be much smaller and hence more portable.

I have a 700m and i love it. Just make sure you get the extended battery, as the regular only lasts 2.5hrs and the extended goes 5. The keyboard IS NOT full size so if you have big fingers, its not for you.

I got mine for $950 shipped new off ebay...

From a technical support perspective Apple beats Dell hands down. Apple techs have all the answers and don't transfer you around. I had a problem with my PowerMac G4 and they solved it over the phone without a reinstall.

I have a 700m (see sig for specs), and love it as a road warrior laptop. The screen beats my old PowerBook G4 hands down. Plus with the 8cell battery, it gets great battery life. I also am going to get the modular drive battery, so it should go for about 8 hours between charges.

That being said, I did love my PowerBook G4, and have every intention of getting a MacBook when they hit their second revision. I love OS X (which is what I use at home 100% of the time), and the OS seems to fly on the new Intel processors (we have a few of the new iMacs at work). I'm waiting off on getting one now just because I know what can go wrong with new product releases. I got a Ti book when they first came out (I ordered two hours after Steve showed them off), and I had a slug of problems. The third revision PowerBook G4 I bought finally had most of the bugs worked out, and has been great for me, and now for my sister who started using it last year.

I'm sure this doesn't help too much, because I love them both. But I'd say if it needs to be a small on the road machine, go for the 700m. If you can wait, maybe see if the rumored 13.3 inch widescreen iBook comes to life. That would be the perfect laptop in my opinion :)

i had a 700m untill i traded it

portable? ohhhhh hellz yes, when its closed i can put my hand on the top and my fingers will roll off the edge

its like 3-4 lbs if that, mine had a 9 cell battery tho so it was a bit heavier

but its freeking tiny

highly recomended

You suck.

My mom got a 700m through work, and I am 100% envious.

Lightweight, powerful. Anything you could ask for in a notebook.

I would take a trip down to the local Apple store and see if they have the macbooks there, and if so, see what it's like.

Well, I ordered a 700m with a 80gb HDD and 1gb of RAM, I didnt order the 8 cell batttery, I will later if I find I need it.

Also, for a wireless router, would this be a good one? I want to stick with linksys. And does this router have a few regular ethernet ports on it?

all wireless routers usually have at least 4 wired ports on it.

Do yourself a favor and cancel that order.

I was on the fence two months ago between the 700m and the 12" Powerbook. I went with the Powerbook and could not be happier. I love it. I use it to take notes in class. It's small, sleek, and lightweight. Keyboard is full-size, and the Mac operating system and the applications that came with it are great. Also bought Office 2004 for Mac. I use Word for typing my class notes, and it also has a feature to record using the on-board mic. This way, if the professor is talking too fast and I can't get everything down, I can just play it back later and tidy up the notes.

Do people not realize that when they say things like, "dell sucks" they only make themselves look like a fool?

At least give some sort of input to the thread. Other than..."dell sucks."

Come on...what are you 10 years old?

For the record, I do support the effort in you purchasing a 700m. I've had mine since September, 05 and have had no problems what so ever.

The size of this thing makes it so easy to live with. If you check the laptop picture thread, you'll see that my hands are quite large, and I type with eas on it.

The mac on the other hand, I have no personal knowledge on. I'd look into it, though. And you may also find better information from http://www.notebookforums.com

I would go for the 700m. Even though I prefer MacOSX over Windows, the $1000 difference is a lot. The 700m offers better portability also.

MacBook.... So much just behind the name Apple, a wonderful OS, a beautiful piece of hardware, and your safety and security. Plus the remote and iSight built in.

Let's not forget all the logic board failures of Apple's previous notebooks.

I am writing this message on my new 700m, which I can highly recommend. I bought mine when there as a 750 off 2000 coupon:

2ghz Pentium M
1gb Ram
100 GB HDD
DVD RW
8 Cell

There are a few caveats you should be aware of:
First, while I am fine with the keyboard, some may not be. It is indeed smaller than normal (I am always weirded the hell out when I use a normal keyboard again).

Second, the touchpad has a feature that I like, but some of my friends find annoying: along the right and bottom edges are actually "quick-scroll" lines, which function like scroll wheels. They can be annoying at first when you accidentally slide over them, but I am used to the pad now, and love it.

Third, there are only two USB ports. Whether or not this is a problem depends on your use.

Fourth, the speakers are bad. Granted, there was not much room to put in good speakers, but do not expect to listen to music and have it sound good. This would not be so bad, except that there is a little bit of interferance (very annoying) when you plug a headphone into the socket. My solution was to purchase that add-in Audigy 2 card, which is absolutely excellent.

Finally, the graphics card: it is certainly passable, and actually one of the better integrated graphics chips I've used on a laptop. Video is wonderful, does not stutter, etc, and supports external monitors at very high resolution. Now, I was not expecting to use the laptop for gaming, and have not (besides a little bit of WarCraft). However, if you listen to music, note that your VISUALIZER will not be able to display shader effects (VERY noticable with itunes visualizer, for example). This has been my only disappointment, and was definitely not something I thought about when purchasing.

Hope this helps.

I've had my 700m for about a month now and I love it. The only gripe I have with it is the small keyboard and only two usb ports, but I'm getting used to it now. And yes, get the 8-cell battery if you can. It lasts longer than the standard 4 cell battery. I also like the fact that I can type up my class notes when I'm in class and that it fits perfectly in my backpack. I'm a university student, BTW.
