70 load temp on DFI s754

is this acceptable?
i have a ag4 3400 that i just recieved and have never seens shits so high.
im wondering if this is a fluke witht he motherboard or what.
i also cant pass prime at stock speeds

memory passed memtest overnight, so i can rule that out.


rest of the specs are 2 twinmos sp, rosewill 550 psu, one hdd, 1 3520A burner
 
i used the thin layer over the a64 core on my other dfi setup.
now my new setup i use the thin layer and im gettin some bogus ass temps.
excat same setup down to the tee.
and this is 65-70 load with a xp-90

also how salty is this, ive gotten my 3 pair of twinmos bh-5 sp
and this latest set cant even run cas 2
salty as hell

will get up to 250 at 2.5 cas latency though.


im gonna try the grain of rice techniue

i stress this now, thin layer is a bad idea with such a large amount of surcase area. a lot of people still argue that it's the better way... but i digress.

how much voltage are you giving that BH-5? baron has said it many times before, and it seems that hes somewhat right.. the new BH-5 isn't as good as the old stuff.

You think a thin layer is a bad idea now? Glad I'm not the only one. I have a XP-120, and I have been very unhappy with it. I have remounted it several times using different AS5 configurations and I found that following Thermalright's recomendation of putting a layer on the CPU and the heatsink gave me the best temps. After looking at the AS'5 and the XP-120 after I took the HS off, it looked to me that the HS never made great contact with the heat spreader. So using a layer on both must have compensated for the contact issue.

I was so let down by the XP-120... I had a SLK-948u which gave me MUCH better temps, but the tornado was SOOO loud.... But with the XP-120 and a 120mm fan that pushed even more air, my temps were much worse.

Since I just got a Venice and a XP-90c, my temps seem so low. Mid 30's running prime95 for 8 hours, I think I am going to lap the XP-120 and possibly the heatspreader to see if my temps go down...


In my room right now I have the following with the following temps at full load (FAH)

3800+ (venice core) MSI Neo Platinum 4 Ultra (non-sli) - XP-90c 81 cfm fan - 36 degrees stock speedvoltage (just got it)

3400+ (Newcastle core) - MSI Neo Platinum (754) - XP-120 125 cfm fan - 54 degrees @ 2.6 @ 1.65v (260x10)

3400+ (Newcastle core) - DFI Lan Party (754) - XP-120 125 cfm fan - 63 degrees @ 2629 @ 1.6v (239x11)

3200+ (Clawhammer core) - Asus K8N-E Deluxe (754) - SLK-948u (30 cfm Thermaltake POS Silent boost Fan) - 43 degrees @ 2.2 @ 1.5v (220x10)
 
it's possible that the sensor is just misreporting on that 3400+. have you tried flashing to the newest bios on the dfi? :D

also.. i guess it depends on the effort you put into mounting the heatsink. i do heatsink swaps disturbingly often, so this is easier.
i have also tried the spread vs blob, and consistantly got better temps with the blob. maybe i was just spreading it wrong though :p
 
I would remount and update to the latest bios on the dfi board.

I also have a winnie 3500+ that is running 51c underload. I am running the latest bios on the DFI (5/04). I guess I should probably remove my monitoring software and just let them be, since they are stable. If I can find the another backplate to one of my SLK948's, I'm going to slap that on there and see if I get better temps. Its hard to gauge now, since summer is here, and running 5 a64's, a XP-M 2600 @ 2.4, and a dell laptop gives off alot of heat.

I'm not having much luck with the XP-120, it seems to do alright at idle, but it won't disipate the heat under load.

The DFI idles at about 40-41 and goes to 63 at load. That is a big swing if you ask me, even if the 3400+ is reporting temps wrong, that is a big differential.
 
this is a newcastle 3400+ s754 at stock settings.
Now im using the small blob of as5 technique and im getting better temps.
50 idle 63 load.
this is with a xp90 and 80 mm coolermaster fan.
im assuming its a decent temp considering my fan.

also my -12 v rail is always at -9.32 no matter what i do.
Is there a way to flash the bios within windows?
 
winflash, though i'd personally do it from dos, just because dfi has that nifty floppy thing :D

a 13c delta from idle to load isn't too bad, but not really great ;) i think this calls for... BIGGER FANS! :D :p
 
just update ur bios to the newst one that u can find on the DFI website and youl bee good to go ;)
 
I find the 3400's run really hot.
I have a 3400 water cooled that idles at 42-43 and under load still reaches about 55.
The 3000 i had before ran much cooler only around 45 under load. It is running 240 mhz faster than the 3000 was but still, 10C is nothing to sneeze at.
 
so nobody really answered my question.
i do feel better since i know that 3400's run hot now, even with watercooling

are middle 60s an acceptable load temp for an a64?
keep in mind its hot as hell in chicago right now
 
well, i don't think it's actually running that hot. have you felt near the bottom of the heatsink? if the cpu is really loading in the mid 60's with good contact, the heatsink is going to be pretty warm.

if it is actually that temp, it's not advisable, but if you aren't pumping the voltage, it should be pretty safe
 
So whats the BEST HSF for the processor, I have the same CPU. I dont care about noise or price, Just want to know what the best HSF hands down is. thanks!

Can anyone verifiy that the XP-120 can fit on a DFI Lanparty UT 250GB w/o any problems? I dont have an oversize PSU or anything. Also, does it need/come with a backplate?

I dont mean to Threadjack, but it seems the original posters problem was solved, so instead of making a new thread, I just continued this one.

I would say hands down the XP-90c is the best air cooler for A64.

I am having some problems with my XP-120's. I have 3, just finished lapping the second one. After I started lapping the base of the XP-120, I noticed it was FAR from flat. I spent 2 hours lapping it with 400 grit sandpaper until I finally just went back to the hardware store to get 200 grit. The base was concave, and after I noticed it from lapping it, I held it up and I could actually see the curvature in the middle. So now it is nice and flat and I have dropped my load temps from 57c to 50c (on my MSI Neo 3400+ see post above for more info). The weather warmed up quite a bit, so my temps are higher than I previously posted. 7c temp drop.... I was astounded. I think I may have gotten a bad batch or when they soldiered the heatpipes, the base got warped. I had my friend bring over his XP-120 from his PC and it was fairly flat. We lapped it, but he only had a 2 degree drop.

I am going to put the XP-120 back on my winnie 3500+ and see if lapping that base dropped the temps any.

If I get similiar results, I will lap the base on the XP-120 that is sitting on the 3400+ on the DFI Lanparty 250.

Oh BTW, the xp-120 fits on the DFI without any problems.
 
dude flash the damm bios

I installed my Xp90 with a 90cfm 92mm Fan and i was idling at 50C but the heatsiink was very cold so i flashed to the new official bios which can be found on dfi site and my proc idles at 35c 40c max depending how warm it is outside
 
bios flash fixed it for me.
i have one of those zalman 92mm fans on an xp-90.
temps are 43-45 idle 55 load using the as5 blob technique.
more than acceptable now.

but i have another problem now.
my onboard sound isnt working.

if anyone can help me out i would gladly appreciate it.

also this is is my second lanparty board and i cant figure out how to oc this board for the life of me, i just end up corruptin my windows and have to reinstall.
and im tired of reinstallin windows if you know what i mean.

reinstall the audio drivers?

also, to save windows, don't boot into windows unless you can pass one pass of memtest #5 :D
won't guarantee stability, but it's a good preventive measure
 
turns out the green audio port is fried.
i gotta use my headphones in the blue jack and configure it through that realtek program.

also i finally figured out how to add voltage to the cpu.
is 1.6 volts safe when im already hittin 63 load at 1.5 volts?
