7 volt mod to a swiftech apogee drive?

So I decided to 7 volt my swiftech apogee drive this morning (just seemed kind of loud to me.) and here are my results. Idle temps are 19-21 C cooling a 5000+ BE OCed to 3.2 and there is a real slight hum comming from the pump (inaudable unless you are right next to it.) also the heat on the pump has gone down significantly. The only thing that worries me is now the sensor wire will not work. So as of now I have improved temps and a silent PC...something has to be wrong right?
 
I noticed a similar phenomenon when I hooked my ApogeeDrive to the Sunbeam fan controller.
Starting the pump at reduced voltage left Everest unable to detect the rpm.
Oddly, starting at 12v and then ramping down still gave a reading.

No idea why.
 
after playing ut3 for 1.5 hours my idle temps have risen to 23-26C Still I'm willing to take the trade off to make the pump silent. I doubt it will make a difference but next week I have a micro res comming in.
 
Dropping the voltage would cut the heat load by... whatever the drop in pump power is. If your system isn't putting out enough heat load to require a higher flow rate, then undervolting the pump should drop your temps some. It especially makes sense that your temps would spike higher (edit: higher than they did with the pump running at 12V) under load too. If you're happy with that trade-off, then enjoy your newly quieted system!
 
I run my Apogee drive at 2900RPM and have seen almost no change in CPU or GPU temps. I run a 2x120mm rad, Swiftech Stealth, and the very restrictive fusion n.b. block on my mobo(Maximus SE). I do like the fact that the only thing I hear now is my rad fans.

I'm going to build same wc system - can you give me your temps and what kind of cpu gpu do you use? What fans do you use and on what speed?

I use a Switftech Stealth waterblock on my 8800GTX. temps run 43C idle, 50C playing COD4/UT3 at 1920x1200.
My CPU, E4300@3.0GHZ with 1.4V. Idle reading with Coretemp 38C, load in gaming 50C roughly. If I use Intel's TAT, I can hit 70C on the cores.
The Maximus formula SE's nb temp never went down using water, temps are usually around 37C all the time.
using a 2x120mm swiftech quietpower with 2 yate loons@1300rpm.
 
I'm running the apogee drive right off of my 12v rail on my psu and it isn't even that loud at all.
 
I have a problem here!!!
I have Apogee dirve too and mine is running load and HOT! I cannot even touch the top of it!! I;m only running leak test for 10 minutes and I;m sooo surprised how hot and loud it is.. water in the pump sounds like its boiling!!!
WHAT IS GOING ON???
 
Running your pump dry is the problem... You need to make sure the line feeding yoru loop is filled with water at all times.

Res > Pump line that is. I had trouble a couple times getting it to fill so I immediately powered down.

Also when you are leak testing are youi doing it with your system on? I used the jumper method and finally figured out an old PSU i had worked even better allowing me to power the pump without turning anything else on which was ideal for filling the loop.
 
I filled the loop in the bath, without plugging it to the computer. T line is half full, about 8 of 16cm long. Never run the pump dry. Started after filled the loop

Wow... um that looks setup correctly.. I've got a Switech pump and I can say two things about it at 12v at setting 5. 1 it is silent. My PSU fan is louder, and its cool to the touch... you may have a defective unit. :confused:


what happens when you pinch a tube? Can you feel the flow? does the sound of the pump change?
 
FWIW, I've 7volted a lot of fans. I notice sometimes the RPM sensors no longer work, sometimes they do. Seems like it depends on the fan. Or possibly the PSU?

I can feel the flow, pump sound doesnt change..
