I haven't seen any in stock on newegg for the better part of a month. Nor have I really seen them anywhere else. Have they been discontinued for some reason or another?

To start with they're a low production item, due to cost most gamers just didn't buy them, so they make just enough for what they expect demand to be. Normally you'd even see a few in stock all the time , but I figure with Bitcoin gaining in popularity and the lack of 5800 cards, this is where they're all going. Just a matter of an unexpected high demand for a normally low demand product.

It's not just the 6990's, the 6970's are getting hard to find now too.

Only 1 brand in stock at newegg.

also NClX has 1 brand in as well.

Bitming is helping AMD quite a bit it seems like.

It's been speculated on some sites, that's the reason for current unavailability,is because something new is about to drop.If it's true,it would be quite a surprise. :)

The 6990's are selling for $800+ on ebay right now. 100% due to bitcoin performance.
