Just wondering if anyone has heard anything about when the 6990s are supposed to be released (other than Q1 '11) Like this month, or next month? Debating on getting 6970s or 6990s.

There is no information . We might get more thursday thru sat of this week due to CES as AMD might have it there along with bulldozer. If we are lucky.

I'd say that two 6990s are going to be faster than two 6970s. Remember the 6990 is a crossfire on a single board set up and all of us are expecting at least two 6950s on each 6990s. I personaly think it will be a 6970 at 6950 clock speeds.

Or March. Q1 2011 = January to March

Assuming that there aren't any more delays of course.

Why are "all of us" expecting at least two HD 6950s on each HD 6990 ?
AMD's past history tells quite another story, which is exactly two highest end single GPU cards, with lower clocks.

Unless they can't contain Cayman's power draw, I don't think this release will be any different.

Two 6970s will be a large power hog and will require alot of cooling. Remember the 6970 is using 40w more than the 5870s and amd went with lower clocked 5870s for the 5970.

Precisely my point. No one is expecting AMD to use two HD 6950s on the HD 6990, which goes against your "all of us" expecting at least two HD 6950s on each HD 6990.

Everyone is expecting two fully enabled Cayman chips, with lower clocks.

Your not reading correctly. Please try again . This is what I wrote

emember the 6990 is a crossfire on a single board set up and all of us are expecting at least two 6950s on each 6990s. I personaly think it will be a 6970 at 6950 clock speeds.

Anyway once again the 6970 is using 40w more than the 5870. AMD already had to reduce speeds of the 5870 for the 5970.

If we look at anand

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4061/amds-radeon-hd-6970-radeon-hd-6950/24

Load

5850 277w
6950 292w
5870 310w
6970 340w

So the 6970 is 30w more than the 5870. The 5870 though had to have its speeds reduced for the 5970 down to 725mhz per gpu from 850 and the ram was down to 1ghz from 1.2ghz.

Its TDP was 294 which is almost double the 5850s 151w ratting and 82w less than two 5870s 188w each rating.

If we look at the 69x0 series we see the 6970 TDP is 250w. Its already at a TDP closer to the 5970 vs the 5870. Doubling a 6970 would bring you to a 500w TDP . We know that doubling doesn't quite work for the lower clock speeds. But it should give you a good idea that even a lower clocked dual 6970 will use a ton ore power than a 5970

So was there anything about this at CES? I'm waiting to build my Sandy Bridge rig until I see benchmarks on this card. I'm not sure what I'm going to replace my 5970 with.

I'm expecting two 6870s. Two 6950s with lower clocks may be doable, but they're limited to 300W for PCIe spec. Two 6870s is already 300W, two 6950s is more like 340-350. Two 6970s at 420-440 is out of the question, even with reduced clocks.

If that were the case, wouldn't performance be very much on par with a 5970?

If you are running an X58 or one of those newer AMD based motherboards that allow for 16x/16x bandwidth in CFX or SLI, there is really no reason to consider going with a dual GPU video card. A dual GPU video card will have to share a single 16x PCIx slot while going with dual 6970's will allow for each video card to have its own dedicated 16x PCIx slot. The other thing is that I think it is garenteed that the 6990 is not going to be two 6970's on a single PCB at 6970 clocks, which means that dual 6970's are going to outperform the 6990 just as how dual 5870's outperform the Hemlock 5970 part.

I am also not a fan of dual GPU video cards because that is a LOT of heat that must be dealt with. As a result, you are almost always going to have to deal with more noise unless you plan on going with a custom or even water cooling setup.

There is not much of a market for these cards, I don't think AMD or Nvidia has it as a top priority.

So you think that my Tri-Fire set-up, 5970+5870 at 1000/1200, is ''slower'' then 3X 5870 at 1000/1200? OMG I didn't knew! I can't believe I'm loosing 1-2 fps when running at 120 fps!

Good think you were here to tell me this. Now I will change my plan and NOT go with Tri-Fire6990+6970.

/End sarcasm. :D

I already have my 6970+ Ek waterblock. Just waiting for the 6990 to go Tri-Fire again. ;)
