6990 issue or drivers?

I do not know where to start with this one...

Rig is in sig so I wont type out all of my components.

I tested my PSU its good.
My rig is 100% stable forever until I play games.
I have a powercolor AX6990LCS

When I play any game, especially bf3, in single screen or eyefinity after a few mins the game crashes my whole system and my monitors simply power down.

I am also getting weird artifacts, like names in bf3 at the bottom of the screen.

My system was stable on 12.7 cat/12.7 cap for days on end without an issue. It seems that I am either running out of VRAM and crashing. I do not go back to windows, all 3 of my displays simply go to sleep mode as if the signal stopped working.

I am perplexed. I have completely cleaned my system of all AMD drivers over 3 to 4 times using AMD uninstall followed by Driver Sweeper and Driver Cleaner software. I reinstalled different versions of catalyst drivers etc...

I am beginning to think that my card is going bad under full load. Trust me when I say cooling is not an issue as it is underwater and idles at 100f (summer right now where I am) and it loads to get no hotter than 135f. I would convert to C but thats not important.

I have more than enough PSU with my AX1200 and one single card in the motherboard.

As I said my system is 100% stable in 2d modes but 3d just sends the LCD to sleep after a little while.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
 
Have you looked into the mb bios to see if there is a problem there?

Nothing has changed in my bios that I have seen. Everything looks good. Also a GPU Z readout looks good too.

I remember I did have a fair amount of coil whine when I first installed the card back in July of 2011. I didnt think much of it because I know coil whine isnt always a bad thing. Could that have been an indicator of failure?

As far as the bios is concerned do you have any recommended items I look at?
 
Well I just found an issue I overlooked. Hopefully someone can help me with more advice.

Check this out... Look at Bus Interface -- PCI-E 2.0x16 @ x16 1.1 ????? 1.1 that is like 250MB/s first generation. My mobo is set to PCI-e 3.0. I will force it to another setting and see what happens. I will update here when done.


This is under load using the included "render test". So I do not think this is the drivers doing this? I am running 12.6whql

This is gonna be a pain. I got an AMD Dozer 6 core sitting in another room but this is watercooled. So I will have to build an entire water cooling setup just to test this card in another system sigh..... for crying out loud.

Problem seems solved for now. Since January I have been running my motherboard in PCI-e 3.0 mode which is supposed to be backwards compat with all lower specs.

However for some odd reason suddenly out of the blue my 6990 just stopped working with that.

So resetting my bios, reloading my OC settings for my 3930K, and changing the spec to pcie 2.0 it now seems rock solid after the last hour of eyefinity bf3.

So far so good. Thanks all for the suggestions in looking in my Bios. I was about to RMA a perfectly good card tomorrow if I couldnt get to the bottom of it tonight.
 
format your entire system, clean install and then install BF3, see if it does it still.
 
funny enough I had a similar issue, same board as you, my system was perfect stable for months, then suddenly i'm not stable at the same settings I had been using the whole time

Its been stable now for over 24 hours. I am going to call it fixed. All I did was change the pcie standard from 3.0 to 2.0 in bios and its been rock solid.

Cant figure out why all of the sudden that would have changed to unstable when nothing changed but oh well.
