If I were to stay with AMD when I do a complete upgrade later this year but would like to use PhysX in some games, is it viable to have a 6970 as the video card and, say, a 470GTX plugged in just for the PhysX to run on? I know even a 260GTX would probably do the job, but you know what I mean.

I just remember in Arkham Asylum, under the PhysX settings, it mentions for High setting, having a secondary card installed even if not used for video would do it, though both cards mentioned in that text were nVidia.

Thanks.

It is officially locked out of the NV drivers to allow this kind of setup, yes there are unofficial hacks around this, but officially this is not supported.

Now ask yourself how many games with PhysX support are you going to play, and is it worth to use those features and go that route.

It is more for eye candy, sure, but it is nice looking candy.

But you are right, there are not really any games out that use heavy physics (that would need a processor) as a part of actual gameplay. But then, why do people care about DX10 and 11 if it looks better but doesn't apply to gameplay at all?

I have my HD 6970 coupled with a GeForce 9600GT and all the few games that uses GPU PhysX runs like a champ, except Mafia 2 which has some sort of bug that underutilizes the 9600GT. Deleting the cloth folder moves the GPU utilization close to 80% and the game runs much faster. Besides of Mafia 2, Batman AA and Mirror's Edge, you aren't missing much. A GT240, 9800GT or GTS 430 should do it well.

i use a gtx 460 for physx , the ut3 physx maps are unplayable without one and batman looks better as well.
