6970 vs 7950 vs 7970

I bought my rig a week ago without a video card to wait for the release of the 7000 series. After reading all of the reviews, I'm scared to spend $550 on a card. I'll be solely gaming at 1080p on a 60". I have a p8z68 pro gen3, i7 2600k, 750 watt seasonic x series. Primary game Diablo 3 but don't want to shell out $350 for a 6970 if it will struggle with newer games. Will the 7950 be better than a 6970?
 
6950 for $200~$240 will do fine for your needs
if you want to save some buck that is
 
According to the 7900 slides, expect its performance per clock to be 28/32 of the 7970 :)

IOW, the 7950 probably performs around GTX 580 level on average.
 
I can spend 400ish. I don't want to go too overboard but do not want to have issues in MOST games. Not interested at all in bf3. I just want the card to play the majority of awesome games for the next 3-4 years assuming my machine lasts me that long :)
 
I'd wait because the 7000 series should be here on January 9th (about 2.5 weeks). Do you have a spare card you could use in the meantime?

Would the 7950 (assuming you can't unlock it) be better than the 6970 or the same? I'd rather go with a new card design even if it's on the same performance level as the older product.
 
3-4 years? not likely. more like 1-2years. I recently jump from a GTX 260 -> 6970. Took a while for me to pull the trigger on upgrading because there weren't any "WOW" games until BF3 came out. 6970 will be for another 1-2 years. I don't like the 7970 spec. Didn't see anything that would command the +200 over the 6970.
 
7950 is expected to be a better card. I might also upgrade to it. If it unlocks, I will be over the moon. :D
 
Awesome. Thanks. And I don't have any Pci card, just onboard i7 2600k lol. I game on ps3 until the new card comes out then I can catch up on my pc.
 
if your primary game is D3, you won't need much GPU power at all
certainly nothing that is used to power a title like BF3 - different ballpark altogether
 
Personally, I hope to see prices of the 69xx series go down. I think an extra 6950/70 will be a much better price/performance upgrade than a 79xx series card. Though I don't want to sound like I dissagree with AMD for trying to charge nvidia prices. I think it's high time AMD recieved a good profit from their products.

I don't see the prices for the 6970/50 going down. The new 7000 series will just take the price points above it, since they perform better.

Assuming the 7950 = GTX580 I'd expect the price to be about $399-$429, keeping the price of the 6970 to about $329.99.
