Hi, I am making a gaming rig for my brother. I am not sure to use AMD 6970 or the NVIDIA GTX 570. The 6970 does have more memory but which will be better in gaming?

How much do you have to spend? If you're going to spend that much might as well get a HD 6990 or GTX 590:
http://www.provantage.com/gigabyte-technology-gv-r699d5-4gd-b~7GIG90JE.htm or http://www.provantage.com/evga-03g-p3-1598-ar~7EVGA0L7.htm are a few examples.

But if you have to settle on those cards I would go with a GTX 580. Slightly faster in some games, known to be a bit better for gaming, but not by much. Depends if the rig you are building uses AMD, I would get an AMD graphics card IMO.

I would go with either: XFX HD 6970 Slightly Stock OC or eVGA GTX 580 You didn't mention a budget but those have lifetime warranties. Good luck!

I am looking to spend around $325 or the video card, and the 6970 & GTX 570 are the same cost. So I want to know which will be better overall.

I'd go with the 6970. Better yet, get a 6950 and unlock it to 6970 specs and use the extra cash for a good game. There are plenty of guides on unlocking the the card. Success rate is pretty high for what I've seen.

I have had a 6950 fail in unlocking so I dont want to risk in that path.

Or just get a 6950 for 280 and unlock it and oc it my unlocked cards run at 950 core at 1.2v. The 2gb of ram on the 69xx cards help if you high a high res screen and if you plan on keeping the card for a few years more vram might help a litle down the road. If you go whit the ati card you can also run bitcoin mining on it and help pay it off I payed off my 3 6950s already and have about $200 worth of coins left over that I'm saying up to buy a new rig. All this after about 2 months of mining

With this statement I really want to xfire and get my cards asap!! Lol

I personally would go with 6970. The boost in performance vs the nvida card compared to energy isn't worth it in my opinion

I doubt you would see anydifference at all in a game. The 570 is a bit faster in some games, and 6970 in others and both in a little margin. So maybe you should consider them equal and consider other point of comparison like brand, cooler (noise) or whats in the package etc.

What resolution? The 570 does a bit better in 1920x1200 if I remember right. I went with the MSI 6970 Lighting because of noise and build quality but I paid a 40 dollar premium.
