6970 Crossfire issues

I am having some weird issues with 2 6970s in crossfire + eyefinity playing BF3. I started out with a single 6970 and everything was stable. After I bought a second one and tried to enable crossfire everything went south. I couldn't get the second card to clock up for nothing. I tried different PCI-E slots, disable ulps, every driver from 12.1, new crossfire bridge. Nothing worked. The second card was always stuck at 250 and would not clock up in game or for any other app. I then did a fresh install of Windows and loaded 12.7 driver and Cap, disabled ULPS and now they both clock up and with TRixx I can control the fans and it works great. However my frames are no better than with a single card. Still stuck at 30-35 FPS.

I can turn the eyecandy up or down and it makes no little to no difference. Also my CPU overclock is now completely unstable. I have to run at stock frequency or it won't even boot up. Even a small bump to the base clock of 10Mhz and it either won't boot or that second card won't clock up. I have reset bios, cmos, swapped cards to opposite slots...nothing.

Here's the really weird thing. Once in a while while playing it'll take off and go like a raped ape. 60-70 FPS for like 30-40 seconds and then right back down to 30 FPS. I should mention that when it does that is doesn't seem to matter the map or server or action in game. Its not like its doing it in low action areas or inside a building. Actually inside buildings I get worse FPS. I monitor temps and neither GPU is breaking 75C at anytime. I have a Corsair HX850 so power shouldn't be an issue. My Killawatt says 650watts at the wall.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am very close to selling them both and going back to the green team.

Are you having crossfire issues with all games or just BF3?

I only play BF3.

I feel sad for you. :(

Anyways, you should try some other games, even demo's of other games would work and there are also quite a few Free2Play games out there also. (try Tribes Ascend)

It might be a bad card. Have you tried running only the new card by itself and seeing what your results are?

No offense but I didn't spend this much to play Free2Play games.

Yes I have tried each card alone. They work fine alone.

Well since you simply refuse to try any other games for the sake of troubleshooting your problems, then go fuck yourself.

No offense.

Also, whats sad is you "spent this much money" to play BF3? rofl.

I never said I wasn't willing to try other other games....I just said I only play BF3. I spent this much money because its my hobby and I enjoy it. Thanks for your help and especially your maturity.

Well when two different people suggested you try other games to troubleshoot your problem, you blew of them off with some elitist attitude acting like BF3 is the only game that exists.

I mentioned Free2Play games so that you would not need to pay for another game to test with.

You got an elitist attitude from a single post that only stated that I only currently am playing BF3....?

I own many other games I just play BF3 exclusively right now as I am in a clan and enjoy playing it. I am not opposed to trying a different game to see if its game related however if I can't get BF3 to work properly with it than, for me anyways, its a deal breaker. Sorry if that sounds elitist...

aThis is adorable.

OP, download furmark and run that, see if the second card clocks up. If not, RMA it. If it does, try a different driver -- what version are you running? 12.6, 12.7 beta? Are your CAPS up to date? That is very important, having current CAPS.

Sadly I don't have BF3 so I can't test it, but I suspect given it's a crazy high profile title and has been out for a bit that AMD has their shit together regarding it. I suspect it's a hardware or driver / software issue.

EDIT: You running an EVGA motherboard? Sadly, my experience is that they're shit when it comes to reliability, that could easily be your issue, especially given your power draw is well within spec on the PSU and your CPU OC went bad when you put the second card in. Don't think your board is up to task. It could be something else, though. Please do as described above and let us know how it went.

I am running 12.7 with latest CAPS. The second card now clocks up properly I just get crazy FPS swings. From 80 all the way down to 25. My CPU usage is pretty much a steady 80% on all 8 threads and sometimes higher. As I said before all of the sudden it'll run really smooth for just a few seconds and CPU usage settles down and it really screams. Then it'll stutter and CPU graph will look like an old man having a massive stroke.....

I have had this board for a while now. It has its moments but all in all its been solid. Maybe its time for a new one. Just thought I could hold on until fall then go X79.

I am going to try Crysis and BFBC2 tomorrow as well.

I have tried every driver from 12.1 to 12.7. The only one I found that will even allow the second card to clock up is 12.7.

BFBC2 -not working...scaling is non existent. Slide show at even low settings
Crysis- Works great and runs it great maxed out
MOH- Single player doesn't work. Second card never goes over 50% usage

BF3- A few things I found on other forums have helped quite a bit

gametime.maxvariablefps 59.95 This alone halved the CPU crazy stuttering
renderdevice.triplebufferingenable 1 This lessened it even more
