Hello all. I'm looking for some expert opinions...I recently built a new machine with the following relevant specs:

2600k @ 4.6Ghz (58C under full load)
Z68 MB
2x 6970s in crossfire (latest drivers / app profiles)
8GB (4x2)

Can anyone tell me if the following Crysis 2 performance is working as expected for my spec?

I'm getting the following performance (via FRAPS):

Settings: Extreme
Resolution: 2560x1600
All Catalyst driver settings at default, crossfire enabled.

Minimum FPS 34 / Maximum 70.
When the FPS drops into the 30s, the game seems to get 'sluggish'. Normally, I would find 30fps playable in any game. Not sure whats going on here.

Thanks for the help.

My setup isn't as powerful as yours, but your performance seems about right. I have vsync on and my frames fluctuate between 40 - 60 at extreme settings at 1920 x 1080. Game runs too choppy for me at 2560 x 1440 resolution, so I play at 1080p instead.

When you say "sluggish" do you mean you get weird stuttering, particularly when there is another character on the screen? I have almost the same setup as you, minus 1 6970. at times, particularly when having conversations with that one hippy scientist guy (can't remember his name) he would twitch in place a bit, even though my framerate wasn't changing at all (at ~34). I'm wondering if this is the "microstuttering" people talk about? I'm not sure because in this case it wasn't very micro at all.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess it is cry engine, after all.

Yeah, despite the fact that this is a console port, this game still taxes even high end pc's, specifically at 2560 x 1600 resolution at extreme settings. Granted, it's no Crysis, but still gives high end pc's a run for their money.

You can't get microstuttering on one card. It only occurs with crossfire/sli, so what you're seeing is something else.

Negative. Its more like when the frame rate drops into the 30s (on big, expansive scenes) the screen motion doesn't feel smooth (almost jerky, perhaps its micro stutter). I've found vsync makes things better, but doesn't completely solve. This situations aren't common, but enough to be annoying.

At 'very high' / 2560x1600 settings there is no issue, because the frame rate never drops below 55.

Yeah, that's microstuttering, most likely. Vsync won't help in that situation, I don't think, when fps are that low.

11.4 cap 2 came out with the 11.5 drivers and days later there was 11.5 cap 1. Here is the important part of all of this...

I know for a fact that 11.4 cap 2 breaks crossfire on crysis 2. with my setup I was getting the same performance using 11.4 cap 2 with 1 card as I was with 2. Test in fraps using crossfire disabled. Compare with your crossfire performance for reference. If your getting shitty crossfire performance then try downloading 11.4 cap 1, http://downloads.guru3d.com/AMD-Catalyst-Application-Profile-11.4-CAP1-download-2713.html remove your current cap, restart, install 11.4 cap 1 restart and try again to see if you get better performance.

I have since beat and uninstalled crysis 2 and have not tried 11.5 cap 1 with it at all. Perhaps crossfire is borked in 11.5 cap 1 as it was in the cap just before it (11.4 cap 2)

I was getting 180+ fps 1920x1200 single LCD. That was on 3 cards of course. However 70 FPS seems too low. I would reckon you should be getting at least 95-110 avg.

Your problem and many others is the crossfire CAP profiles are not well written for Crysis 2. I had to use RadeonPro and force the profile for Fear for it to work right.

Not sure if this is a bug or what but I've found an issue where crossfire stops working if you have your browser running in the background, with youtube opened up. Not sure if it's just me or if this is a problem across the board?

Adobe flash will cause your Graphic card stay on 2D Mode, it will cause stutter in CF..

So that's what it was...I just installed my 2nd 6970 in Crossfire yesterday, and a friend sent me a youtube link via Steam friends. I clicked it ingame and the game crashed; I restarted later and CCC popped up showing that Crossfire wasn't enabled. Something I'll have to keep an eye on, thanks.

No problem. Glad that it resolved your issue. :)

Wow, good to know. I'm just going to close my browser from now on when I play any games. Thanks.

Its running better. I tried using the older cap as well as radeon pro for the FEAR solution. At the end of the day, after the reinstalls, reboots, etc the micro-stutter is gone. Go Figure.

Combined with the fact I can now run at 2560x1600 (Extreme settings) with VSYNC. FPS hasn't increased (still 30s to 70s), but the sluggish performance is gone.

Fuckin awesome. Thanks for the tip. I have dual monitors and leave my internet browser open all the time with multiple tabs open. Windows will pop up all the time asking to lower graphics settings and turn off Aero while playing games.
