Hey guys,

I've been thinking about upgrading my 6950 for a while now since it doesn't play all of my games at the best settings. The most I'm willing to spend is about $300 give or take, but if I could find a significant upgrade for a much cheaper price I would love to go that route. To be honest, I haven't really been keeping up with graphics cards as of late so if you guys could recommend/link me some that would be appreciated.

I have two 22" 1680x1050 monitors that I game on, using only one and the other for random stuff on the side while I play (main reason I have two is when I program and use VMs). I also have a 1920x1080 HDTV that I occasionally play games on when I want to sit back and use a controller for adventure games like Tomb Raider and Batman. My specs are in my sig.

Thanks in advance!

280X or GTX 770 will be fine for your resolution, and is in your price range. That said, the 280X is sold out everywhere due to the mining craze so the GTX 770 will probably win that by default. It costs around 330$ for 2GB, which is fine for 1080p - it has a 3 game bundle that you can sell to offset the cost by 50$ or so.

The 760 is 250$ or around that, but it is quite a bit lower performing than the 770. It is around GTX 580 speed levels which is probably 15% better than what you have now (especially if you unlocked the shaders to a 6970) - which is probably not as big of a performance increase as you'd want. I'd say go for a 770. If you're lucky enough to find a 7970 or 280X i'd say hop on that as well; the GTX 770 and 280X are generally equivalent to each other in terms of performance.

I am in the same boat and I think I will go for the EVGA 770 GTX

I would also recommend going with the EVGA GeForce GTX770 w/EVGA ACX Cooler 2GB

Great card for the cost and will perform a little better than the R9 280X at your resolution. Nvidia cards also have better driver support and Shadowplay among other features. The R9 280X is a great card but at the current price for the 770 I'd go that route.

If you don't plan on mining I'd say go for the 770, at least they are easily available. R280x cards are practically sold out everywhere and as soon as a shipment comes in it lasts minutes in stock.

I been thinking of replacing my 6950 in my main rig in sig. A 280x would be good for it. Cheaper than the GTX770. I'am planning to get a GTX770 however for my NCASE M1 when it comes in. I figure the GTX770 is better fit for that mitx case as opposed to the 280x since I can get a blower type card 770 that will exhaust the heat out the back. I like the look of the Titan cooling GTX770 but they are around $380. Kind of pricey.

I don't think you can go wrong with either to be honest. Assuming everything equal in requirements the 280x is more value for the dollar. They wont be sold out forever. Give the stores a week at most to restock.

Since so many recommended it I ended up getting a 280X, this one specifically:

It went out of stock shortly after I purchased it. Thanks again I'm hoping I'm satisfied with it over my 6950

XFX has improved the cooler design and noise is much lower than the earlier Double Dissipation design. temps are in the low 60s.
