6950 or 6870 CF

Currently running a 6950 2gb not unlocked, but I'm tempted to try crossfire with 2x6870's although I don't know if it would be worth it, or even if I would benefit? I'm running a single 22" at native 1650/1080 and I don't have plans to go multi-screen, although I might hook things up to my TV so then it'd be HD res. With a new family member arriving I won't be upgrading for a long while and want the setup to last me as long as possible.
I currently have the Phenom 2 555 unlocked to Quad, but my board supports AM3+ so I plan on dropping in the BD in June.

I would just stick with a 6950. You will not have any problems running any games at your resolution. You already have the card, so just keep it. You will not notice the difference between the 6950 or 6870 XFire imo. Down the road you can always add another 6950 when it gets dirt cheap as well.
 
^^^. Banzai nailed it. At your resolution, if you do notice a difference, it will be with 8x SSAA and insanely high AA settings like that. Hardly worth your money, time, and hassle in my opinion. Does your 6950 have trouble with anything? If it doesn't, all the more reason to stick with what works. I'd keep what you have for now.

I actually don't use AA at all... only AF. I just want the power under the hood for when BF3 and Skyrim arrive... those I want to run at the highest detail.
 
I'd suggest that you confront that obstacle when you get there. I've heard numerous times that BF3 is being developed on the GTX580, and while I'm not sure, it seems like nVIDIA may have a performance advantage like it did in BC2. In that case, going with nVIDIA would give you better returns, but again, we have no idea how demanding any of these games will be. 6870 CF will probably be enough, but so could a 6950, or maybe even neither of the two. I suggest dealing with that obstacle if/when it arises, it's more cost-effective and reliable to be successful that way.
 
I understand about having the opportunity to buy now, but maybe not later. Buy another 6950 2gb and you will be good for a long time at that resolution. It won't do much for you now but later on you may want it and not be able to talk the better half into the purchase.

exactly :)
 
at his resolution, any game now or near future will be playable. with a 6950.

6870 crossfire is alot of performance. You will need 1080P+ resolutions to take advantage.
