I've been moving all of my machines to smaller rack mount cases; the latest, my desktop, couldn't quite fit into this ARK 3U

Since the warranty was up on my video card, and the best that would fit 3U was R9 270 at $200, I decided to try changing out the power connectors to make it fit.

The process was touch and go with my mediocre soldering ability, but it's running fine. Now I just need to make cutouts in the back plate and I'd like to swap out the thermal pads when I have a chance.

A small album of the process:

Very cool mod. I contemplated this very same thing on a few htpc builds. Great execution! Always fun to see people use rack type cases in different ways. So much potential in those things.

Whether it was out of warranty or not it takes guts to cut it up and try soldering on your own connectors. You are a man amongst boys. Gratz it looks great.

Thanks! About half way though I was pretty sure I'd ruined the card. Then in my haste to test it I forgot to reconnect the video card fan and I thought it was dead for a few seconds. I'm really glad it worked.

It's a whitebox XenServer. I pass-though the 6950 to a Widows 7 virtual machine that I use as my main desktop.
