6950 HSF Problem

So I've recently gotten some new 6950's, and as part of the detailing process of getting the new arrivals I've been taking them apart and putting them back together after cleaning and re-applying the TIM.

Well, take the cover off my current problem to see that the TIM's real thick- much thicker than a credit card. So silly me thinks, 'ok, I'm going to get this puppy running great with a nice thin sheet of AS5 or equivalent. Putting it back together and then taking it back apart to check for the nice TIM contact left me shocked. There was ZERO TIM on the cooler. It didn't even touch the die!

So... ideas? Loading it FULL of TIM would do SOMETHING for sure, but not exactly what I would call ideal. A shim? Removing the bracing around the die? Who's hit this before?
 
that happens in pretty much AMD cards depend on brands some more than others.. thats why the insane amount of TIM. to fill the gap between the HSF and the chip die... some people look the way to mod the HSF to make it have better direct contact...
 
Yea, but how to resolve? Will removing the support work and I just have to be careful fastening it back on? Or putting in a shim? I can't find anything relevant to a 6950.

What brand and kind of cooler are using your card? Or even better if you can provide some pictures so we can think in a way to help you...

don't use as5 on a gpu, you might short the gpu

You are right as many people can make short circuit on mobos... But they only have to take care at the moment of spread the TIM. I've used in many cards mine and friends arctic silver 5 without any issue...
 
It's the stock HSF. I'll get some pics later tonight with a straight edge showing how the die is recessed and the HSF isn't bulged out to meet it.

Yes, conductivity and all for spreading around, I take very good care not to have any leads, beads, strings, or whathaveyous to kill my card.
 
Well, I removed the shim around the die, and have confirmed that it now makes good contact. Still overheating badly when stressed, but it idles just fine. I'm going to check to make sure there's no BIOS problem by getting the appropriate file from the VGA BIOS collection on TechPowerUp.
 
Keep us updated to know more of the issue.. Hope get solved..
 
Well I've eliminated BIOS as a problem, since it does the same thing with the stock #2 BIOS on the card as well as a new unlocked one from TechPowerUp.

It's running a little cooler due to more pressed, but it still is overheating. More pressure via putting rolled up electrical tape underneath the mounting bracket, forcing the arms on it to bend even more to reach their screw holes.

But still not fixed completely. It's un-minable!
