6950 Crossfire Eyefinity - First impressions

I have owned 5850 crossfire, 5970 2GB, and now these 6950s.

The biggest adjustment is being able to max out AA. It makes for a far better gaming experience.

Dirt2 ran with a much noticable improvement over what I was used to on the 5970. I recall getting around 44-45 fps then (6048x1200), and I get around 55-56 now, but it seems far better than just that incremental of an improvement. I was able to max AA as well, before I was running 2X.

JC2 is night and day. I used to have to run shadows off, SSAO off, and no AA at 5040x1050. Now I can completely max out the game at 6048x1200. No hard numbers here.

Crysis Warhead is now playable at Eyefinity resolutions. Enough said. From Hell's Heart used to be a slideshow, no matter the Eyefinity res.

I don't own AVP, but the benchmark was reporting about 5 to 6 additional FPS. It was much smoother with no hitches.

Seems as if Crossfire has been improved.

Heat/power/noise? Runs just about as hot and about as loud as an overclocked 5970 (I put fans on 60% to be safe). Don't see any real issues with the distance between cards thus far.
 
Idle 50s load 88, 37% fan. Havent checked with 60% fan yet

Do you think the smoothness you're seeing is because of the improved frame rates, or has microstutter been minimized? Could you run something that gets ~30fps and let us know if it feels smooth... like single-card 30fps?
 
So your cards are sandwiched? As in, placed in two slots one on top of the other? If so your temps seem good, nothing to worry about it seems.

It might be. I can tell you that in the AVP benchmark, I only averaged 5 more FPS but the hitching that was present with the 5970 was completely gone.

Yep. The last slot on the Rampage II Extreme cannot have a dual slot video card in it, unfortunately. Temps seem very similar to 5850 crossfire and a single overclocked 5970. Fans dont get loud either, at least not at 88 C with default fan speeds.

That's very very good news... I hated my 5970 for that reason, it didn't even feel like the 100fps I was getting in TF2 Eyefinity was smooth... I get a better experience in 1280x720 on my 5450. Seems like hyperbole but it's not, having a lower frame rate (~35) but steady is far far better in my book.

I have a 6970 on the way but I'm sticking with single-card until I'm convinced microstutter is dead.
 
The fans didn't move above default on auto, and the cards got up to 88 C. Inaudible.

I like to run cooler, so I set my fan speed to 60% on both cards. It wasnt any louder, and might have been quieter, than a overclocked 5970 with similar fan speeds.
 
Good to know. I have my 6950s coming in about an hour (if the Purolator driver follows his usual route...). I'm going to be running 3x 2007FPs (16x12) so looking at a res of 4800x1600. Hope CF+EF works well.
 
I tried BC2 but havent got the gpu usage above 50-60% on one card.
get good fps but my 6850 crossfire had 99% usage both cards.
(better fps)

I assume its drivers or profile needs adjustments.
Huge cards tho
 
So 6000 series Xfire is better than 5000 series? That's good to hear. Let's hope AMD doesn't f that up with bad drivers. LOL
 
I dont own BC2... but I do know that there was no accompanying profile for Cayman along with that Dec 9 hotfix driver set. I just installed the regular 10.12 profiles

You got the Sapphire, right? Let's hope the XFX is quiet as well...
 
2 sapphires. I don't see any reason why there would be a difference.

Does the P6N support crossfire?

No it does not. I'll have to build a new system for that. That's why I got only one card for now and will get another when I build my Sandy Bridge based system.

I have smooth gameplay same as with my 6850x2, same settings, all low.
I could play with higher settings but I enjoy max fps.

Tonight BC2 night ;)
