6870 XF GPU2 not reporting temp or clock

Hello all,

Just built a new rig, specs are-

MSI 6870 twin frozr II x2 in Crossfire
i7 950 stable at 4.2ghz
nh-d14
Asus Sabertooth motherboard
6gb Corsair XMS 1600
Corsair 850 watt PSU


In MSI Afterburner and the default catalyst software, GPU2 does not show a temp or clock speed, yet it shows load and fan speed. In the catalyst software it just shows temp and clocks to be 0. In MSI afterburner it does not even display a graph for temp and clocks and it does not have an option to enable displaying them.

I believe XF to be working as GPU2 shows a load while running 3Dmark and I get a score I would expect from my system. It just bugs me to not be able to see temps and clocks on GPU2.

GPU1 is displaying everything that it should in both programs.

Only thing I have tried so far is swapping out the XF bridge for another.

Anyone have an idea as to why this is happening?
 
its not showing temp even when running 3Dmark or any software that uses crossfire?

it could also be a bios issue on the card.
 
weird... have you tried the second card on its own or with CF disabled to see if it comes up?
 
OK....

I have somewhat figured something out.

If I start up MSI afterburner or the catalyst BEFORE running a program that utilizes XF, it shows no temp and clocks on GPU2. However, if I start up afterburner or catalyst WHILE running a program that utilizes XF, I can see GPU2 temp and edit the clock speeds.....

Is this normal?

I have tried putting both cards in slot 1 with no card in slot 2, and both work normally in slot 1. I have tried both cards in either position while XFed and it's always GPU2 that I can't monitor unless running a XF utilizing program. I have swapped the PSU leads to both cards while XFed and it changes nothing. And, I have swapped XF bridges.
 
sounds like the power saving either on the board or in the drivers are disabling the card and not allowing the program to see the info. but running a cf program wakes the card up and allows the program to read the sensors after the fact. kinda weird but makes a little more sense now. might be something in the bios about power saving on the pci-e slots or something.
 
Yes, it's likely ULPS, an AMD driver power saving feature. That can sometimes cause freezing when applying an OC with Afterburner if your second card is in a sleep state. It will also cause the second card to not be properly monitored if it is active and that card is idle.

Details on disabling ULPS below-

"ULPS saves power by sorta disabling the second card when it is not needed.

Here is how to do it:

Go to registry and disable Ulps:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Cl ass\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]

and change "EnableUlps" to 0 under the 0000 and 0001 or 0003 keys."

I turned it off when OCing with HD 5870 Crossfire and Afterburner because I'd sometimes get the freezing I noted when applying an OC.

After you turn it off or back on, it's best to restart.

BTW if you want a nice program that gives you great driver control for apps, try Radeon Pro.

This fixed it. I can now see GPU2 temp and clock speeds even on a fresh boot without opening a program that uses XF.
