6870 & DuoCore E8400 Bottleneck?

Hi All: I don't want to build a new system yet. Waiting for AMD Bulldozer. Would like to score a 6870 vs. my old 4870. Will my E8400 @ 3.0GHz be a serious bottleneck? I'm not too savy with o/c the CPU, but I'm sure I can tackle it without any issues. Play mostly strategy games with an LG 24" monitor (see my signature) @ 1900x1200. Any inisght? Maybe it will save me another year or so without an upgrade?

The bottleneck will depend on what you are doing. Games that don't need 4 core CPU's will be fine. You can squeeze more out of that CPU I would hope, which will help. Heck I run BC2 decently with my CPU and its older then yours, but also I am running at 3.5. Read up on YOUR games, if they don't benefit from a quad core you will be fine. I came from a 4870, so our rigs are similar in speed, overclocked you will be better then me with a 45nm chip even if you ran it the same speed as me.
 
Thanks for the reply! I just o/c my E8400 to 3.8GHz! Just did a "Google" for my Gibabyte MB/E8400 & installed CPU-Z. It reads 3.8GHz without an issue. I do have a decent heatsink, so I'll keep tabs on my temps. Should I go ahead with a 6870 considering that Newegg has a 10% off promo right now?

If you have the money go for it if you don't want to play the waiting game. I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing the 6870 for $200 AR and a coupon like the one with newegg right now early next month at the rate things are going. Nvidia and AMD are going to have a big price war IMO.

6850 is the better buy for the price to performance. If you want to OC of course. :D
 
Thanks everone for the help! I went ahead & ordered a Gigabyte 6870 (@239.99 minus 10% total price w/ shipping $227.86)I wanted the XFX version, but Newegg decided to bump up their price another $10.00 to $264.99. It's funny how NewEgg offers 10% off then bumps up their prices!!!

Can anyone give me an idea what my HIS 4870 1GB VC is worth? I want to sell it ASAP to make up for the new 6870.

Just depends on the game. Most games no but BC2 and especially GTAIV the E8400 will be the bottleneck.

I disagree. BFBC2 played SMOOTH on my E8200 stock. A stock E8400 is even better, and an overclocked 3.8 GHz CPU is more than any game right now needs.

I'm running my E8200 currently at 3.2 GHz with a GTX 460 1GB, so yes I DO know what I'm talking about.
