6870 Crossfire question.

does crossfire setups use all the memory on both cards? or is sit still split to get the same buffer as a single card. i remember back when i put my old 6600gt's (i know, there nvidias) it would only use 64 megs off each card even though they had 128 on em. A friend bough a second card to set up a crossfire config. to take care of his framerate drop due to the High res on his new catleap monitor (2560x1440). was wondering if i should have him return the card and just get a better single card.
 
To answer your second question: 1gb will likely be not enough at 2560x1440, i'd go at least 2gb.
Crossfired 6870s do run nicely at 1920x1080p though.
 
Tell your friend to return the new HD 6870 . sell his existing HD 6870 for 100 bucks . get a HD 7950 OC. HD 7950 OC easily is faster than HD 6870 CF. has more VRAM and bandwidth which is required for 1440p monitor. HD 7950 has a much superior DX11 architecture. its just not worth going multi GPU when you can get a faster single GPU for around the same price.

erm?

first the 7950 is 300 some $$. You can find 6870's all day long for 80-100$. I had 6870 crossfire before i upgraded to 7870 Crossfire.

6870 crossfire is a good setup, lots of gpu power, limited by 1 gb vram. Works really good for 1080p,

1440p - could cause some vram issues with high amounts of AA. So will have to run lower AA. If it was 1600p then I would ditch the 6870's and go something with a larger frame buffer (2gb or more)

Overall if you feel like shelling out 300$ then 7950 hands down, or a GTX 670. Otherwise 6870 crossfire is a good cheap solution to fit your needs.
