6850 prices going up?

Been lurking for a while and finally joined the conversation.
Iv'e been eyeing the 6850 and kind of waiting for the dust to settle from the launch and looking for a deal to pounce on as well as waiting on some reviews that showed the different brands cards compared for noise volume.
I just sold my gtx260 so my hand has kind of been forced and I need to move on a card. I do still have a 240GT and am actually finding it to be getting usable framerates in many of my games so I am not totally desperate to act right away. I can put my demanding games on the back burner for a little while and play the less graphically demanding ones for a bit. My timeframe is somewhere in the "weeks" neighborhood. I can hold off if something like black friday or 6900 series launch will bring good things in the near future.

It seems that 6850 prices are creeping up though.
I was leaning toward getting an Asus until a recent web article really favored them and all of a sudden they seem scarce. Didn't this card launch at $179.99 on newegg? I do know for certain that it was $186 a couple days ago. Now it is out of stock again and is showing $189.99
The Gigabyte which has been $179.99 from day one at newegg now is showing $189.99
I saw one deal on slickdeals.net right around launch time that had the Gigabyte at about $175 but that went fast and there has been nothing since.
So, is this a very short term bump or is this a trend?
I remember hearing of other AMD cards selling out at launch. What was the pricing trend with those cards? How long was it until things settled down?
 
Both the 6850 and the 6870 have been creeping up in price. No idea how long it'll last but I remember seeing the gigabyte 6850 on mwave for 174 earlier this week, now it's sold out with the price at 194
 
Yup, places are starting to gouge now. Only one at the egg at $179 is the HIS, quite a few are over $200. I wont fall into the extra price to go crossfire. I will get a new PSU when I find one on sale, then get my second card later. Already got a new soundcard, using PCI-E now, so I have room for my second card and proper air flow.

I learned to NOT wait after the 5870 price disaster.
But yet... I waited.

I think when you see them being out of stock, especially MULTIPLE brands, you better be ready for price increases.
Shouldn't really be a surprise, they have all been selling out since the 2nd or 3rd day.

They are being a business and getting more money for hot sellers. I just don't fall into the trap. There were reports that stock was plenty on the cards. I will get a second card, but it will be on the price its suppose to be $179 or less.
 
Not surprised here. AMD and Nvidia finally wised up and do not have price wars anymore.
 
Prices here have stayed the same (memoryexpress) in canada. got my 2x gigabyte 6850's for $190can
 
Dang I got my 6870 for $236 delivered a week ago w/ coupon code and now i see the price is $299 plus shipping. Ouch.


Edit: nevermind. the black edition is $299.

Think of it this way: You're spending budget money to get a new generation card... the 6870 and 6850 aren't fantastic cards, but they're part of the 6000 series which has a promising 6900 series inside, too.
 
They might be trying to maintain stock/maximize profits until the 69xx series releases; since the 68xx series appears to be selling like crazy.
 
I've noticed the price increase, too. It might have something to do with tight supply or a realization that they could have priced the 6850 higher in the first place.

My gut told me this was going to happen based on what happened with the 5850. At first I thought newegg was raising prices to level out the 10% discount sale, but now it's become more apparent.

With the 6950/70 rumored to be pushed off there's no reason not to hike prices a little. I'm just glad I decided to buy at launch.
 
Man- I'm glad now I got my gigabyte+XFX 6850 Crossfire when I did. (a week apart or I would have bought 2 of the same one:-p) Paid a total of $345 for the pair :) Gigabyte was out of stock when I bought the second card and I decided to just grab the XFX, and I'm glad I did with ho much the price has gone up since :)

Well how did that work out? I wasn't following along a the time. How long did prices go elevated?

I noticed from setting up the auto-notify email of back in stock at newegg that the Gigabytes would go out of stock for about three days and then back in stock for about three days. The Asus seems to be following the same pattern now.

Isn't manufactures stated retail $180? Newegg is the only place that even had cards for $180 at launch. Amazon has the Gigabyte at $196. Amazon has the HIS for $180 but that is the only 6850 at that price.

So is this all about the retailers making the choice to sell above manuf. suggested retail price? If there was inadequate supply then it seems that Newegg wouldn't be continuously getting new stock every few days. It would also seem that there would be that one discounter somewhere that was willing to do a slimmer margin.
 
Glad I got in before the prices increased. Figured we would see the same kind of thing that happened with the AMD 5000 series but more than likely not to that extent.

Sucks to see but it seems to be the trend.
 
With the prices going up (again) it is hard to recommend getting the 6970 over a 470 or a 460 1gb. The price/performance ration is getting more skewed. When the rest of the 5xx series comes out, or the 6950 comes out, we might see prices return back to sane. Fortunately, we haven't seen the 6870 go up $50 over msrp like the 5850 yet. So that's something good.
 
I just noticed this as well. It seems that Newegg adjusted the prices on the 6870 from anywhere from $10.00 to $20.00 price hike.
 
Good gravy the Asus 6850 is now at $199 at newegg. Its out of stock as well as most of the other 6850's being out of stock.
I wanted a 6850 but I don't think I want one enough to justify the expense over a 1gb 460 for the $160 range on the right deal that also comes with potentially sell-able games to offset some of the cost.

Still keen to know what to expect for the near term future prices based on others here experience with past launches of cards.
I don't see how 6950/70 launch could play into this. Isn't AMD looking to go after 580 customers and therefore have the 6900 series be the highest performance and cost tier.
 
Although prices have creeped up a bit, in the 6850's case, it looks like it's only been about ten-fifteen bucks and only on certain models.
 
Ya' 6850s are great and many are up to 200usd now. If I were going to drop that on a video card, I'd get that.

It's 200 when you add it to the cart. It also has a 25usd rebate. So it's 175 if you bother with the rebate. TPU got one to do 850 on the core with stock voltage.

They're cool and quiet to boot. 61C load OCed. I'd grab that and OC with Afterburner. With additional voltage you may pass 850.

When the 6900s come out, let's buy up all the initial stock and then sell them for a profit when price skyrockets muahahahahahaha

Seriously though, people did that for the PS3 and made lots of cash.
 
Looks like Radeon 5850's are $199 after rebate now. Heck, I might just go with one of those.
 
Bought a 5850 instead of 6850. Combo deal with an XFX PSU. Total was 275 with 2x30 rebates. PSU was 60 after rebate. 155 after all said and done is hard to pass up.
 
At launch the 6850's were sitting at roughly $169.00 USD and the 6870's were sitting at roughly $239.00 USD. They've both gone up about $30.00-$40.00 USD since then. Sad. :(
 
Funny, here in Australia the price went down. First it retailed at $269 and these days the cheapest one you can find is like $218.
 
The overclocked 1 GB versions of both the GTX 460 and the 6850 cards are roughly equal in performance and price ~$200-210.
 
The MSI 6850 at Newegg is the best one to get, not only is it listed at $204.99, it also says its 725 clock speed. Hell yes, overpriced and clocked SLOWER then stock. :D

anandtech did a roundup of them and the MSI was by far the loudest :(. The Asus was the best overall IMO.

I know the clock speed is a typo, just like the Asus is listed at 800 stream processors. Why the MSI is at the price it is boggles my mind.
