6850 desktop tearing

just got the card today and it booted up fine and everything soon as i installed the new driver the screen tears when i log in windows and i see my desktop. it don't tear when i play games and it acts like nothing is wrong. i install older drives and still nothing. I don't know how to fix this. also i have a 500w psi, 8gb, amd x4 quad core.

You cant tear non moving graphics. I think you are using the wrong word.
 
look at that pic. i get those like tears of black blocks and it goes away when i'm booting up pc and playing video games or watching a video
 
no, it's still stock never even oc or unlocked it. it was brand new. I bought it from tigerdirect
 
i suggest you return or RMA the card. what do the temps look like. download MSI afterburner
 
That temp seems ok. Card is likely defective and doesn't work well with 2D stuff. I had a card just like that recently. It would work just fine when I played 3D games but would artifact on the desktop.

Exchange it.
 
I say if it constantly happens it is probably a bad card and the best thing to do is just to RMA it.
 
Try a different driver, just in case. If it isn't resolved, RMA the card. Artifacting at the desktop is very rare with properly working cards.
 
ok. I also retsrtaed my pc and it was back but I turned off aero and turned on window 7 basic color and it went away. So i guess my card don't like aero turned on. does it mean its still a broken card?
 
what drivers are u running and have you tried. it doesnt sound normal at all and I would return it for another one.
 
This may sound stupid but check your monitor cable/hdmi cable and make sure it is properly seated. My boy's computer did some crap like that a while back and I thought he had a fried card too, I went to pull the side panel off to see if it was overheating first and I just nudged the case a little and it all went away. I moved it back and it all came back. I ended up replacing his DVI cable because it wasn't seating right from being bent downward for so long.
 
Yeah it seems as though it needs to be RMA'd but try the latest driver out 11.1a and be sure to clean out the ATI driver with driver sweeper or whatever. Also check all the cables connecting to it and reconnect them including the inside power cable to the video card. Sometimes this problem just relates to connecting cables up or it got loose in some way. Anyway, best luck to you in fixing it. If you are able to test this same video card out in another Computer, DO IT...
 
ok. I did some more testing and i'm going to RMA it because it can't run anything above dx9 without artifacting. so the card is broke or what you guys call defective. I had to be the one to get the defective one... my luck suck
