680i PCI Express Issue

I have a strange problem with a home theater PC that I am setting up. Not sure if it is a video card or mobo issue. The mobo is a evga 680i, video card a 7950 gx2. The gx2 will not work in the primary PCI Express slot. There is no video signal, though the PC does post with 1 long beep and 2 short, which I think means a video problem. This card is old so I just assumed it died. I installed a 7600GT that I know works and had no problem. Gets a video signal and boots right up with the 1 beep like normal. Then i decided to move the 7950 gx2 to the blue secondary PCI Express slot and it works in that slot perfectly, though I cant use it this way because it says I need to move the card to the primary slot.

Does this mean I have a bad PCI Express slot? And if so, why does the 7600GT work fine in that slot, but not the gx2?
 
in your bios, the pci-e frequency might be too high for the 7950 to handle.. some mobos have that cranked up as high as 125mhz by default.. try dropping that to 100mhz if it's set higher than that..

edit: it could also be a power thing.. that's a hungry card with two gpus on it.. the primary slot might for whatever reason supply less power? it could be the sign of your primary slot being marginal.. well.. anyways, try dropping the frequency first. it might help stabilize the card in the primary slot.
 
Thanks for the suggestion. Thats not the problem though, as it was already set at 100mhz.
 
I wish I could just RMA it. Unfortunately its well out of warranty.

It's an EVGA... even if it were a TR revision, it's not likely to be out of warranty. If it's an Ax (A1, A2, A3, etc) version it has a lifetime warranty...
