Fellow [H]'ers,

I am a little lost as what to buy. Price isn't that big a deal, but after doing so research, I do not have a clear idea of which card is better for me. I used to hate ATI cards back when the NVIDIA TNT was the best card out, but when nvidia came out with the GeForce FX line I vomitted uncontrollably for about a week. I love my 9800xt to death, but it is time for an upgrade.

I am currently looking at a GeForce 6800gt or a Radeon X800XT. Anyone have a suggestion of which I should buy?

I am a WoW addict and also love some CS every now and then. I plan on playing Battlefield 2 when it comes out aswell. When it comes down to it, if it is a good game, i will be playing it.

Thanks in advance!

props on a nice system, checkout some 850xts, I own none of the above; but thats a card im looking into at the current pricing of cards now.

Go with whatever appears to be cheaper. Honestly, in my opinion, they are both very great cards.

I can only use AGP cards. No, I am not upgrading my mobo! :)

I found a EVGA 6800gt for $374 at newgg.

The Sapphire X800XT i was looking at is $449 at newegg.

I wish i could see them go head to head in a benchmark or something.

Anyone have any experiences with these cards?

edit: Thanks for the props on the Rig, I have worked hard on it.

Hey I also went from a 9800 XT to a 6800 Ultra. I would get a BFG 6800 GT OC And BIOS flash it to BFG 6800 Ultra BIOS. I am currently running an EVGA 6800 Ultra BIOS flashed to 6800 Ultra Extreme edition with no problems. You play all the games that I play. I play World of Warcraft, Battlefield series and Counter Strike source. It runs smoooooth as butter (could be because I have 2GB of RAM and FX53 :p)

The 6xxx series have more ife than the x8xx series because they're soon going to be supporting the "useless" PS 3.0 feature this year. I would lean towards the Nvidia 6xxx they have everything that the ATI card can do and plus PS 3.0 and HDR. I haven't looked back to ATI after I got my Nvidia. It's been smoothing sailing since I installed it and BIOS flashed this card.

I can't wait for Battlefield II myself :) I can't wait to play it!

I say bullshit to all the PS3.0 nonsense. I say get the 6800GT anyway because it's cheaper and just as fast as the x800xt. Just seems to make sense.

I used a x800 XT and a 6800GT, and it seemed like the x800 XT was faster, I had overclocked the GT to ultra speeds also. It was probably because I was playing source tho... BTW, if you look on zipzoomfly.com you can find the x800 XT for $430 or so, thats where I got mine...

wow......i still don't know what to get.

I only use Newegg for online purchases, as i buy from them a lot and have very good experiences with their customer support. Yes, I am close minded, but hey, once you know, you newegg.

BFG's are all sold out and I need to get a video card here by Tuesday. Is EVGA a decent company to buy from? What about XFX?

X800XT all the way. It meets the 6800GT at stock settings, and if you overclock it, you'll eat up the 6800U too.

Add AA/AF into the picture and the NVidia solutions get put further behind.

Note, i'm not talking about specific codepath optimized games here i.e. Doom 3 or Half Life 2, rather some random game you'd pull off the BB game isles...

The high end X800 are just better AA / AF performers at higher resolutions. :)

either wait for the AGP version of the X850's or get the X800XT ... it's better than the 6800GT and if o/c will beat the 6800ultra which isn't that hard

I have both the 6800GT and the X800XT PE. Even o/c'd to Ultra speeds, the X800XT seems to be faster in all the games I normally play with the exception of Doom3. Still, I don't think the differences in performance are all that significant. If gaming is your bag, I'd go with whatever is cheaper and/or available.

Speaking for myself, if I had to choose between the two, I'd take the ATI. I use my machines for alot of DVD playback and movie watching and the X800XT has better image quality in this regard.

Why do people keep comparing the x800 XT to the 6800 GT? Shit. The XT costs more, so naturally it is faster. Duh.

In AGP:

x800 XT-PE ~ 6800 Ultra Extreme
x800 XT ~ 6800 Ultra
x800 Pro ~ 6800 GT

Get whichever one you can get the best deal on, they are all good.

I've got a BFG 6800GT and am going to upgrade to an X800XT PE as soon as I get a chance. The 6800GT is a good card, but I get a lot of crashes when playing games like Riddick and HL2 at their highest settings. I don't want these problems to get worse when I hook up the Dell 2405 I ordered. I also get some choppy DVD playback which can be traced to the 6800GT. From my understanding, the ATI cards run cooler than the Nvidias, which is especially important for SFF computers. I

Hey guys..
i just upgraded from an athlon xp 2400+
9600 pro..
to amd 3000+ socket 939 winnie
and i had originally gotten the eVGA 6800 GT
but i decided to be greedy and went to eVGA 6800 ULTRA...
here is what i know.. from what i know i know eVGA offers a 2 year warranty with the card.. BFG offers a lifetime warranty... although i dont think you are supposed to mod them (watercool em) and what not.. supposedly it voids warranty(slightly kicking myself for not getting BFG)
but i have had previous eVGA cards so im happy...also .. the Ultra did score higher on 3d mark 05.. on both win xp and win 2k by maybe 30 + points..if i remember correctly.
I might buy the ATI brand name next time and see how that compares .. for my other project.. ..

Another thing you could check out, are the AGP X800XLs, Im not quite sure if there are any out yet, but I know they are going to sell for $350.

I have the ATI X800XT AIW, if you use the Omega drivers rather than the Catalyst ones that come direct from ATI, you can tweak out the cards a bit more. Currently at 1280x1024 (not quite 1024, 960 I think in HL2), with everything ALL the way up, I'm pulling 105fps easy, without a stutter or hiccup at all. Naturally I turn everything down for CSS to pull the most fps possible, which happens to be around 155-160 or so on average. It's a fantastic card, quiet as anything, and only takes up one slot. The Omega drivers have a built-in frequency overclocker, so you can play around with it some, and realistically if you go with the Visiontek XT card you can crank it up to the same speeds as a PE model, without any stability problems at all.

Wow....

Looks like I am going to get the X800XT. I really like Sapphire.......but i will look into the visionteks.

Just a side note, Just because something costs more, doesn't mean it is better. All true [H]'ers know that.

Thing is the 6800gt is a good bit cheaper......i really still don't know what to do. I really want to see some benches or something of these two cards.

I'd rather pay a $100 less and lose maybe 1-5 fps than pay more for only slightly better performance.

X800XT it is. BFG GeForce 6800GTs are expensive too.....

Sapphire here comes my money!

Thanks guys!

For what it's worth, I've noticed that there aren't too many people that go from a 16 pipe X800 to a 6800 series card. And the people that go from a 6800 series to a 16 pipe X800 seem to prefer the X800 card. Hopefully, that gives you peace of mind about your decision. :)

I will have to agree. I have owned an 6800NU, 6800GT, X800Pro and X800XT PE Pelt cooled at 645/600 and all flew and ran games very well. By far my favorite was the X800 XT PE. It will run better with AA and AF at 1600-1200. My new card is a 6800Ultra cllocked at 470/1.2 with a NV5 and it runs like a champ. Got it for 400$. I say get what ever fits in your price range. I still prefer Nvidia's Drivers.

well...I found a BFG 6800GT OC for $400. I have it running and it kicks major ass.

Going to try to overclock it later.....this thing came with a nice heatsink......maybe it will hit ultra speeds.

Anyone have any links to possible bios upgrades..(like 6800 ultra bios)?

So you got the GT?

Yo could just OC it to Ultra speeds... no need to flash any bios...

Yeah... I got the GT. I have been running ATI for awhile..... What are good programs to use to overclock this new card?

I heard NVtweak was good.

Coolbits, that what I used for my MX440SE (running stock cooling, which is a little 1 square inch peace of aluminum, ontop of the GPU...without a fan...)

Awesome guys!

I got this 6800gt to overclock to 425/1100, the ultra speeds!!!! Everything seems very stable, temps are fairly normal. Going to do some more stability tests, but looks like I saved a ton of money!!!!

I give the BFG 6800GT Warmonkey's Bonerific Hardware award!

Yeah I made the mistake of buying an Ultra instead of a GT and overlock it an Ultra speed. I wish I found out about the BIOS flashing of the GT before I got this Ultra. Good luck with your free Ultra :)
