I am planning on two 7800GT's to run in SLI for my new rig...but i am coming up a little short on cash. So i might only buy one of them now.

Is one 7800GT clocked at 470 going to be a good deal faster than a 6800Ultra?

Or should i cut something else out and go for the SLI now?

More pipes, higher clocks, newer tech, less power consumption. 7800GT is better on all counts. Also, a quick search on Froogle shows only a few 6800 Ultras anywhere close to the price of a 7800GT.

I'm sure he's fully aware the 7800GT is faster. I think his question is whether it is fast enough to justify the expense of upgrading. I don't think it is, but it's your money.

Id wait.Just to see what nvidia and ati are going to be pulling out in the next few months.Maybe you could find a nice price drop or deal on a 7800GT.Hell my 6800nu is still doing fine so I know there isnt anything bad with 6800Ultra to suggest getting rid of it ASAP.Wait and see.:D

Sorry i should have made this a bit more clear.
The 6800U is AGP, on my old system. i am building a whole new rig, i just was wondering if i would notice any big changes if i only got on 7800GT to start, or if i should just get em both now and cut costs somewhere else.

IS your 2001FP 1600x1200? If you're trying for 16x12, I'd want SLI for the latest titles.

In that case, I would go with a single 7800GTX and then get a second one down the road. The 7800GT doesn't do as well at those ultra-high resolutions, and the GTX should perform very well at 1600x1200.

i've been thinking about this alot. I had planned to get two GT's at once to drive 3-4 monitors, but i bought a more expensive proc than i had planned. So i did consider getting a GTX and waiting for a few months or so.

Kinda hard choice. I am hoping there will be a good price drop sometime soon.
I've read a few places that the performace difference between the GT at like 470 and a GTX isn't that big though.
